Springfield Symphony Orchestra Joins Local College Choirs for Concert
To present Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra has teamed up with the combined choirs of three local universities to give the piece the strength in numbers it requires to shine as the composer intended. The united voices of 200 performers from Drury University, Evangel University, and Missouri State University will fill Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts as they join the orchestra to perform the complete symphony. They will perform at Juanita K. Hammons Hall on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.
Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, better known as “Ode to Joy,” is an instantly recognizable and well-beloved work of musical art. Revered as one of the composer’s best works, this is all the more astonishing due to the fact that Beethoven was almost completely deaf at the time it was written. From its first performance, the symphony has thrilled audiences and inspired countless composers, and it remains one of the most admired artistic works in all of history. The piece remains unparalleled as an exuberant celebration of life and music.
Extreme Joy is part of a series of concerts constituting SSO’s Extreme Symphony 2016-2017 season. Every month, the symphony focuses on a selected composer or theme to show how powerful, dynamic, and “extreme” music can be in a symphonic setting.
