ALSC Competencies for Librarians Serving Children in Libraries: Commitment to Client Group; Collection Knowledge and Management
Course: LIS 60629 Engaging School-Aged Children
This community analysis and LiveBinder collection for school-aged children was created for LIS 60629 Engaging School-Aged Children. In order to provide services that meet community needs, while offering materials and services that expose people to cultures and experiences outside of their own, librarians need to be familiar with their community demographics and how those affect service provisioning. After identifying and summarizing community demographics, my goal for this project was to use that information to build a developmentally appropriate and dynamic collection using LiveBinder that was representative of the community while at the same time offered insights into other communities and lived experiences in the world. I composed every annotation and utilized resources such as Follett’s Titlewave, ALA’s Booklist, ALA’s Youth Media Awards and Honors, and Goodreads to develop a diverse collection featuring fiction and non-fiction, digital media, audio, and print materials that would be engaging, inclusive, and fun.
