My learn goal for this semester was to create a board that had common conditions on a postpartum unit. I was not familiar with topics such as how to reduce perineal pain, mastitis, and how mothers can cope with postpartum depression. These topics were personal to me as I have family members who became new members and experienced these conditions. They were unaware of how to move forward and this inspired this information board in case there were other new mothers in the unit who also did not have the knowledge. I've grown to the idea of making healthcare information appealing to look at, as pamphlets and papers can make conditions seem daunting and uncomforting. This board will stay up in the unit for postpartum patients and families to view.
On the unit, I saw various cases of newborn jaundice, which all required phototherapy as part of the treatment plan. Many mothers expressed concern for their infant being under the light. I made an infographic that explained the testing done and how it is a common conditon among neonates. I used this to educate patients on the testing and therapy and how to support their newborn through the treatment.
The population in the unit consisted of mostly 20-40 year old age range. It's also important to note that not only was care being done for the patients but support was provided to the family as well.
