Nursing revolves around patient care and compassionate adherences to one's well being. A hollistic approach to nursing is critical to one's health as it is comprised of not only physical, but emotionally, culturally and spiritually. Physical treatments are a fraction of what nursing provides a patient. Nightingale describes this as an art and science in which is all intertwined (Brown, 2023). All my BAVs are related to this concept as nursing is based on the well being of patients by being trustworthy, compassionate, respectful and empathetic to ensure that prevention and treatment are being done. By having these qualities, being able to enrich someone's life, not just physically, but intrinsically as well, is rewarding.
An individual is seen as a whole person, rather than just a 'patient' with a condition. Understanding that every person has more than just a chart, has stories and insights on life that are important to who they are as a human being. Judgements based on assumptions can minimize a person's value (Weiss et al., 2023). Allowing a patient to make decisions about their care is essential to adhering to one's autonomy (Brown, 2023). This falls within my BAVs' respect and compassion. Respect and person coincide with eachother as they recognize these rights and the dignity of individuals while being treated with fairness and equality. These values and ideas come together to create a sense of individuality and the needs based on beliefs that may differ from your own.
Overall health is the result of one's physical, emotional and spiritual being. Prevention and education is essential for ensuring one is equppied with the right tools to make decisions about their health. Health goals and strategies that are one of many factors that are implemented to ensure a positive long term outcome (Nyamathi, 1989). These factors can help those define their goals and how to cope with their conditions which also highlights a multitude of variables that influence health (Nyamathi, 1989). In order to reach these goals, nurses must obtain their patient's trust to ensure accurate information is recieved by the nurse. My BAVs trust and empathy play a role in this paradigm as trust and empathy levels can impact how patients respond to information they are given regarding their conditions or willingness to seek further advice on their overall health.
Environment considers one's surroundings and factors that influence overall conditions. This paradigm is rooted in the understanding of how one lives their life. The environment in a healthcare setting is also taken into consideration as it can impact the healing of a patient (Brown, 2023). When there is a harmonious environment where the patient feels that everything is organized and there is collaboration within healthcare staff, they report being more satisfied with their experience (Chism et al., 2014). Other factors can include how accessible medical care is, how their interactions with staff are, and specific everyday challenges that can affect their well being. My BAV empathy is an important part for this paradigm as it allows for a nurse to place themselves in the shoes of another to reimagine what they may be experiencing that prevents them from a healthy life.
