My SMART goal for this semester had a focus on recognizing the signs and symptoms of ventricular fibrillation. I discussed the pathophysiology/etiology, signs and what to do in the event of a declining patient. On the cardiology unit, telemetry is used to monitor cardiac rhythms that present in different conditions. I have also included sample ECGs on the information board that can also help care professionals to identify erratic rhythms. This board was kept and will be placed in the unit for not only staff to see but for family members as well. Family members know their loved ones the best, so any sign that may be displayed, will be noticed by them and I think it's important for them to know signs and symptoms that could indicate an impending code blue.Â
I presented this board in clincial to my classmates and supervisor. They found it very helpful and also an interesting way to present a stressful situation that can arise in this unit. I wanted to present it in a way that is unlike other information boards, where it was pleasing to look at depsite the seriousness of the content. Medical information is typically presented in a simple way. I like presenting informaiton in a non-conventional way in order to engage more people with the information. I had fun creating this board and I hope it can provide further education to patients, staff and family members!
The population in this unit was mainly older individuals. I was definitely out of my comfort zone as this was a learning curve, but I'm so happy I got many opportunities to learn about procedures, diagnostics and treatment/therapies to help with cardiac disease.
