How does costume- making connect to the community?

Costume making connects to the community because it connects to the idea of someone portraying  a character with this fabric and it puts the love of art into a physical visual. Just like acting, clothing is shown around the world every day with the clothes we decide to wear; with characters' we use clothes to help portray the idea of a character and can be used for multiple character's not just one. Through different stories and people, this capstone can be used throughout the years; it's not a one and done thing, but more of many stories all shown in a jacket and a skirt just waiting to be worn once more.

How has your Fine Arts courses impacted your education?

My fine art courses have taught me many things for my education, it has taught me speech patterns and the use of the English language that was used a few hundred years ago that some might not quite understand at first. It has taught me how publicly speak with a large audience and use my body's posture and movement in order to tell a story to others. How to work through a situation with a team of people when something goes wrong or find a compromise that works for both sides of the party. It's taught me how to be responsible with my schoolwork and stay up to date with my work while being in a play.  Along with becoming flexible with unexpected situations popping up and being adaptable to these new grounds.

What was the process to create your capstone?

The process first started by having to draw out ideas that were coming to my head, even if it might've not made sense, I wanted to get it down on something whether it was on paper or digitally. After getting them down I  can start specifying what fabric  I want to use and what i'm using them for; making sure I have almost twice of what I need just incase I needed to restart again. Then I looked at references with my own jackets and skirts online to see the bone structure that i needed to create; then sketching those out onto separate pieces of fabrics closest to my body shape. From there i just sew these fabrics together and make sure it fits comfortably but not too tight or loose.

Would you make any changes that you would make next time to improve your project?

I would definitely take more time to understand the shoulder and neck outlines when it comes to making a jacket because I under estimated just how much needs to be connected in order to make sure it doesn't just hang on your shoulders or worse falling off.  I would also want to experiment with more colors together because I  mainly used two colors ( even if one of them is different shades of the color) because it could make an even more eye catching result and could give me possibilities to work with in the future! Along with preparing more tools such as scissors or thread because I didn't expect to run out of these things or have them damage so I had to come up with the next best thing.

Personal Biography

Josie is a senior who's been in multiple shows before and has done sewing for many years but never combined these two interests together. Taking inspiration from costumes she puts together the idea to combine the two most well- known groups in the movie musical "Grease" the Pink Ladies and the Greasers. With the guidance of her Theatre teacher Ms.Cortes and their animation teacher Mr. King who allowed her to plan out their initial designs, she was able to start her long journey of this capstone project. About four months later the jacket and skirt have become a reality and can be shown to the world and even worn on stage if they were every chosen by the creator Josie and the Director Ms.Cortes.
