If you've read the “About Me” section, you’ll know that I'm particularly fond of horror games, not just playing them, but understanding what makes them work. That passion was put to the test when my level design lecturer gave me a challenge: to pick the most terrifying moment in Resident Evil Village and analyze it in depth. The goal was to break down what makes that particular sequence so effective from a design and emotional standpoint.
Over the course of about a month I analyzed everything from the spatial layout and pacing to the use of sound, lighting, and jumpscares. My aim was to understand how each element contributed to the fear players feel, not just through surprise or shock, but through a persistent tension.
The final document is something I feel truly proud of. It represents my understanding in horror level design. The feedback from my lecturer and several others level designers was positive, which gave me even more confidence in my ability in research and documentation.
I suggest opening the document to visualize it better.
