In this project, I used data from the Pew Research Center in order to provide a statistic and information related to social media usage. I also took a social media addiction quiz on itstimetologoff.com in order to determine whether I am addicted to social media or not. I also used information from the Pew Research Center in order to support my own opinion on social media's impact on society.
According to the "Am I ADDICTED to social media?" quiz on itstimetologoff.com, I have a healthy relationship with social media. It states that those with a healthy relationship with social media will not usually check social media, live in the moment, and only use it every so often to keep up with friends. I think my social media usage is good. I also cut down on my social media usage earlier this year, so I believe that there is little need to cut down further.
An interesting statistic on social media usage from the Pew Research Center is that individuals with a salary of less than $30,000 are, on average, less likely to use any form of social media when compared to those that make more.
I personally think that social media has had an overall negative effect on society. That isn't to say that it doesn't have any positives, because there are a lot of positives to social media, just a lot more negatives. Firstly, I think social media has made it harder for the generations that grew up with it to focus or do tasks they need to. This leads to many people with procrastination issues and many due dates hitting them all at once. I also think social media has ruined an entire generations social skills as many people don't know how to socially interact in person, as they either interact like they would online, or just don't interact socially in person at all. However, I do think social media has allowed for humanity to be more connected than ever before, and this has lead to a more understanding and accepting society. This is because social media has led many people to interacting with people from cultures they would have never even heard of if not for social media.
Through this project I learned about the statistical impact that social media has on society. I also learned of my own connection with social media, and if it has affected me at all. Looking over the social media statistic also allowed me to formulate an opinion on social media as a whole, and its impact on society.
