Using the google news search engine, I found two examples of cybersecurity in the news. I provided basic information (the who, what, where, when, why, and how) as well as information on the accuracy and purpose of the news article. I used the information provided to evaluate how these threats could affect us and how to protect ourselves from them. The first article I looked into involved an attack on mississippi election sites according to thehill.com. The second article from cnbc states that according to a federal report, U.S banks processed roughly $1.2 billion in ransomware payments.
Brief Summary:
This article published by thehill describes an event in which election sites in Mississippi were hit by a cyberattack. The Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson states that the "election system was not compromised." It was also stated that it was done via a "handful of distributed denial of service attacks" and hit multiple states including Illinois. In order to protect ourselves from attacks like these it is important to have multiple methods for voting available in order to prevent attacks from blocking votes.
Evaluation:
This article was published by thehill, a news publisher which creates stories exclusively involving the government. This article was published directly to their website by Ines Kagubare on the 9th of November 2022. The article is short and seems to be written with intent to stir controversy as there is very little links to outside information. They do however get information from high standing officials as well as other sources, just very few. This makes the article seem more opinion based or untrustworthy.
Brief Summary:
This article published by cnbc describes a government report which states that approximately $1.2 billion were processed for ransomware attacks in the US alone. This article describes how ransomware attacked following the hacking of U.S based Colonel's Pipeline's IT network and affected even the CEO of the company. The article also states that countermeasures are being discussed at Washington to protect against ransomware attacks. In order to protect ourselves from these attacks, we will have to be careful of the sites we visit as well as networks we connect to and files we download as these can infect our PCs with ransomware.
Evaluation:
This article was published by cnbc which publishes articles about stories across America, whether they be political, business, or even technology related. This article was published to their website under the politics category by Chelsey Cox on November 1st 2022. This article also refrences, links to, and cites multiple other sites for their information including the CISA and the whitehouse government websites. This article also strays from using opinion based materials and seems to focus on factual, statistics based information.
