SANDSTORM

Sandstorm is a worldbuilding project made in 6 weeks, inspired by a JUNK post apocalyptic world in which humanity has taken refuge in huge ravines to hide from the scorching sun. In the game, your task is to rebuild a broken Jellyfish, a structure that provides oxygen, to repopulate a lost city.

About

The game is essentially a walking simulator. So the challenges in development were to create as many interesting moments of awe and wonder as possible. First we created paths through the ravine that allowed for impressive camera shots and angles that showed the scale of the world.Next was making the world come to life through sound, animated objects and remnants from the past to hint of the people who used to live there. The project is made using Unity's HD Render Pipeline which brought a lot of tools to help with atmosphere: volumetric fog, high quality shadows and advanced lighting effects. But at the same time it provided an equal amount of challenges to performance which we tried to tackle with LOD's, scene loading, occlusion culling, different batching strategies and more.

For added atmosphere we implemented voice lines for the character as well as on gramophones that the player can interact with.
