One of your favorite places will be going into the West Bank and entering into Bethlehem, now a busy Palestinian city. Behind an Israeli checkpoint and a large border wall, you will experience the paradox of the peace of Christ's birth in the midst of conflict of this occupied land. It is a striking paradox that will not be lost on you once you visit this ancient town.
Besides seeing the traditional sites of the birth of Christ, you will most enjoy looking out over the few remaining shepherd's fields that still dot the landscape beneath newly constructed Israeli settlements to the north. It will be a memorable time of reflection and prayer. We will probably sing a Christmas carol or two and imagine what it was like "While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night". The phrase, "peace on earth, goodwill towards men", will take on new meaning.
If you haven't seen this nativity video, check it out! It seems more historically accurate than any video done by the church.
If you have never read Jesus, the Christ, by James Talmage, it is a classic! And it can be listened to online here or on your gospel library app. Well worth the time!
You could also review all the other resources under "Jesus Christ" in the Gospel Library. These include videos, artwork, prophetic testimony, the Living Christ (worth memorizing).
You could also read this classic talk: The Child, the Boy, The Man Few People Knew
There are so many other talks and books on the Savior's life, but the best thing to study are the 5 Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John ... and 3 Nephi!) You can even get a jump start on Come Follow Me readings for next year.
You will not hungry on this trip! The food is amazing. The breakfast and dinners are incredible, with a hundred choices! There is something for everyone, even the most picky of eaters. Plan to try everything and gain a palate for mediterranean cuisine.
Each day we will stop for lunch at unique places that allow you to experience the culture of the area we are visiting. You will be exposed to many other foods, including shwarma, falafel, and schnitzel. It also allows our bus driver and guide a short break. Remember, lunches is the only thing not included in the trip price, so make sure you bring about $15 - $20 for lunch each day. Many places may take credit cards. Some days you may not each lunch because you are so full from the amazing buffet breakfasts and dinners at the hotel. But you will probably want to try it. But packing a few snacks in your personal bag may help tide you over between meals.
It is very important that your passport is securely on your person while you travel, locked in the safe in your hotel room while in Israel, and not forgotten as we travel between hotels. It is very wise to make color copies of your passport to have on you or in your personal bag at all times. Be wise.
