Another highlight of the trip will be the Western Wall of the ancient Jerusalem temple. Although, most of the temple mount is dominated by Muslims with the famous Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa Mosque. This small portion of the temple wall beneath is dominated by Orthodox Jews. It boasts the oldest part of the ancient wall and is the place where Jews come to offer prayer - in part, praying for long promised ancient temple temple to be rebuilt. 24 hours a day, Jews come to his holy spot. You will have multiple opportunities to see this special site. Get a sneak peak here.
There are many types of Palestinians Arabs in he Holy Land, including many that are Christians. But most of them are Muslim. You will see Islamic mosques everywhere you go and hear the call to prayer multiple times a day. Latter-day Saints have a lot in common with Muslims, including a lot of our beliefs and practices. These include belief in prophets, a code of health, modesty, fasting, almsgiving, chastity, scripture, strong families, a pursuit of righteousness, resurrection, and a day judgment.
We have a lot in common with the 5 pillars of Islam which are declaration of faith & testimony, daily prayer (5x a day), giving to the poor, monthly fast, and a pilgrimage to Mecca. (In fact, our trip to the Hoy Land should be seen as something of a pilgrimage for each of us!)
Unfortunately (partly because of islamic extremists), in recent decades Islam has been treated unfavorably in the news media and popular culture. One of the most important things that can happen on this trip is for you to kindle a great love for the muslim faith and people. You will come to appreciate their great faith and culture.
The Church recently released a a pamphlet about Muslims and Latter-day Saints that is great! You can also learn more about Islam from this article here. And for a more academic approach here and here.
Modesty matters in Israel. Most of Israel is very accommodating to western tourists and most sites are accessible without further clothing. Modest shorts, skirts, short-sleeved shirts/blouses are appropriate to wear at almost every site. Following church standards in the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet will be mostly sufficient. However, there are a few places where modesty in dress matters a little more because of the sacred nature of place or church. Be mindful of any clothing that is too short or revealing. Even then, you may be asked to cover up to proceed. And in some cases you will be given a shawl or scarf (or you can bring your own) to cover your head, arms or legs temporarily. Of course, the standards for modesty are just as important for latter-day saints, as it is for orthodox jews, christians, and muslims, but the application may be a little different.
Don't pack too much, most of your pants and shirts should be worn multiple times, and don't need to be washed unless they are really dirty. We are traveling the whole time and checking in and out of 3 hotels, so go light and it will be easier. :)
