The Old City has 4 quarters, enclosed by an ancient wall, with a maze of streets, shops, markets, churches, synagogues, mosques, homes, and museums. The 7 active gates allow access into the old city. Behind every corner is a new adventure. YOU WILL LOVE THE OLD CITY!
You will enjoy shopping in its middle eastern bazaars and market places, meeting the storekeepers and residents. You could never spend enough time there, but we will do our best give you time to explore a lot of it. Learn more here.
We've done a lot to prepare for this trip, but I found the greatest preparation has come in actually reading the gospels! In fact, I have gained a lot from listening to them on the Gospel Library app. It's actually quite good!
But if reading (or listening to) the entire Gospels seems a little overwhelming before Christmas, try just the Gospel of John! You will find that John writing to the members of the Church will appeal to you and his unique personal accounts will invite you into the Savior's world in a much more personal way than the synoptic gospels.
At the minimum, take a quiet moment during the hoidays to open the scriptures and reread thru Christ's last week and any other parts of His life that touch your heart. Soon you will be there where it all happened!
Remember, Southern California weather is very similar to Israel. The initial forecast looks pretty cool as we approach winter. Galilee can get very warm during the day, Tel Aviv is much more temperate, and Jerusalem is always cooler at the higher elevation. A chance of rain is always likely, so I would plan accordingly to be warm and dry both day and night. Layered clothing and allows for the most versatility as you travel.
Every group in Israel is required to have an official Israeli Tour Guide with them. Our Israeli guide is Saleem, an Arab Christian who is also a good friend. He will play an important role on our trip keeping us safe and providing important info at each site. Even though we will be sharing LDS perspectives and insights at each sight, you should feel free to ask him questions about anything related to Israel throughout our trip. He has much to offer, including his years as a tour guide, his Christian faith, and fluency in multiple languages (including Indonesian). You will quickly come to appreciate his inside perspective, humor, and especially his testimony of the Savior.
