One of the highlights of our trip will be a trip to Hezekiah’s tunnel in the Ancient City of David of Jerusalem. This is a short 20-30 of minute walk, about 500m from the Gihon Spring to the Pool of Siloam. It was designed during the time of Hezekiah to preserve Jerusalem with water in times of siege from the Assyrian invaders. Workers cut through bedrock and incredibly met in the middle. It is an ancient archaeological engineering masterpiece that we will get to experience first hand! It ends at the Pool of Siloam, where Jesus later heals a blind man. (see John 9)
ENHANCE YOUR EXPERIENCE TIP: It is quite the adventure navigating through this ancient tunnel and stream of water in the dark. A small flashlight or mini headlamp will be helpful. Water shoes or waterproof sandals are also advisable. The water may be cold this time of year and it may rise above your knees at parts and maybe to your waist depending on your height so bring a change of clothes. Those not wishing to get wet can walk the dry Canaanite tunnel and take in views from the observation deck. This is a highlight!
It would be good to become familiar with the geography of Israel. The weather is very similar to Southern California. Bodies of water and other landmarks are almost identical to Utah with a salt sea, a fresh water lake, and the Jordan River flowing between them.

In New Testament times, you could roughly divide regions of Israel from North to South: Galilee in the North, Samaria in the Middle, and Judaea in the South. An easy way to remember: God Sent Jesus. Galilee. Samaria, Judaea. Begin studying Bible maps and as you study the scriptures, pay attention to locations and make connections on a bible study map. Here are a few helpful resources:

Besides watching the Bible Videos, this app has a interactive map component that allows you to explore the Savior's life based on location. It's simple but helpful.
At each location we will open up the scriptures and try to make them come alive on location. You will receive a participant handbook that we will use at each site but you will also need your own scriptures. We anticipate most of you will use your smart phone to access your digital scriptures from the Gospel Library app. There are a a lot of advantages to this and we recommend it! Since we will be in the scriptures a lot each day, you will will want to put your smart phone in a mode that conserves more energy.
PLAN AHEAD TIP: You will also want to bring a portable battery pack or charging stick in case your phone cannot last the whole day.
Also, check your cell phone provider to make sure you have an international plan, if you desire. Internet communications like Skype or FaceTime often work pretty well in the hotels.
However, remember, we don't want your cell phone to ruin your experience. So, be sure to "spirit mode" (airplane mode) your phone most of the time, and if it is too much of a distraction, bring paper scriptures instead.
