My PhD thesis was on an estuarine shellfish, and eventually was published over a wide range of time! This led to my appointment at the St Andrews biological station of the FRB as scientist responsible for investigations on the economically important scalop fisheries of the Maritime Provinces, and later, on other benthic mollusc resources and on the controversial squid fisheries, where the problem of age reading was a critical one.
