Mr G. W. Zeigler

Mr G. W. Zeigler

There are not many jockeys whose names begin with the letter Z, so it is worth celebrating the achievement of amateur rider Mr G. W. Zeigler for not only riding in races but also winning one on his own horse.

The occasion was the Hoylake Welter Chase at the Wirral Hunt Club fixture at Park Gate, Neston, on April 25, 1891. Mr Zeigler rode his horse Gone Away to beat seven rivals, winning by half a length.

It was the only ride Mr Zeigler had that afternoon, and Gone Away, who was having his only run of the season, was not seen again until the corresponding meeting the following year. Although still owned by Mr Zeigler, he had then been replaced in the saddle by Mr A. Comerford, who had finished second in Gone Away’s race the year before. The new partnership finished second, beaten a whopping 50 lengths, in the Wirral Farmers’ Chase.

Gone Away and Mr Comerford contested the same race the next year, 1893, this time winning by 30 lengths, with only one of their three rivals completing the course.

Although horses owned by Mr Zeigler continued to race at the Wirral Hunt Club meeting until 1896, he did not ride any of them. Nonetheless, he is entitled to take credit for being what must be one of the very few riders with a surname beginning with Z to ride a winner.
