Mark Hedley Yeoman was given plenty of rides under National Hunt rules during the 1980s and had four wins. He was a conditional jockey first with Sid Kernick and then his son Neil, both former jump jockeys.
His first ride, Spekes Valley, was unplaced in the Crowcombe Selling Hurdle at Taunton on April 9, 1981, and it was more than two years before he had his first win. It finally came at Devon & Exeter on August 4, 1983, when Bargello Sun took the lead at the fifth fence and held off the challenge of Peter Warner on Presceena Wood to land the Foinavon Novices’ Chase by a head. Mark kept the ride throughout the season and was placed six times from 11 starts.
He had his second success at Taunton on the first day of December when Brandy Fair took an early lead and beat Crowning Moment by two lengths in the Corfe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase. It was Mark’s first ride on the 13-year-old who was winning his first race since March 1981.
It was not until March 13, 1985 that there was a third success when 33/1 outsider My Always ran on strongly to deny Sommelier in the Allied Hambro Exeter Ltd. Handicap Chase at Newton Abbot. Mark had ridden the ten-year-old on all of his five previous starts that season, in which they had been second once but also come to grief three times, including their most recent start when falling at the first fence.
Mark drew a blank in the following two seasons but did manage one more victory when My Skiway, owned by the executors of the horse’s breeder the late Miss Ursula Brander-Dunbar, beat Weirpool by a neck in the Staverton Maiden Hurdle (Division 2) at Newton Abbot on May 5, 1988. My Skiway started at 50/1, having shown nothing in four previous starts that season, the most recent of which had been at Devon & Exeter three days earlier with Mark in the saddle.
