Charles Yarnell

Charlie Yarnell was born in Lichfield in 1876 and served his apprenticeship with William Elsey at Malton. He failed to ride a winner as an apprentice but remained with Elsey’s stable when coming out of his time.

He eventually rode his first winner on Bambini at Newcastle on April 11, 1898.

He enjoyed his best season in 1901, riding 42 winners, which included the Northumberland Autumn Plate at Newcastle on Galashiels and the Great St Wilfrid Handicap on Dark Eye.

It was, though, a relatively brief career, for he relinquished his licence in 1905 having ridden 124 winners.
