Terry Lucas

Australian jockey Terry Lucas rode more than 1,500 winners globally during his career in the saddle, many of them for Ivan Allan, who trained with great success in Singapore and Malaysia.

Terrence George Lucas was born in Brisbane, Queensland, on July 1, 1950. He served his apprenticeship there, then went to ride in Singapore in 1975 and stayed for four years. It was during his time there that he came to the attention of Mick Easterby, who trained a few horses owned by Ivan Allen at his Sherriff Hutton yard.

Terry first came to Britain in 1979, teamed up with Easterby and rode 10 winners that season. He returned in 1980 and 1981, registering 26 winners in the latter season. They included three victories on Easterby’s Walter Osborne, most notably the David Dixon Sprint Trophy at York. He also won that year’s John Smith’s Magnet Cup on Amyndas for Newmarket trainer Bruce Hobbs. At the end of the year, Terry went back to Singapore for another four years.

He came back in 1986 and settled in Newmarket, where he stayed for two seasons and won the 1987 Bunbury Cup on Individualist for Michael Jarvis. He then went back to Singapore for yet another four-year stint.

During his years in the Southern Hemisphere he won three Queensland Derbies, two Singapore Derbies, two Singapore Gold Cups and a pair of Malaysian Derbies. He was associated with some of the best horses to ever race in Queensland including Tails and Dalrello.

Terry returned to Britain in 1992 and based himself in Yorkshire with Mick Easterby, spending the Flat season in Britain and heading off to ride in Singapore or Queensland in the winter. He shuttled back and forth across hemispheres for several years. He did spend the winters of 1998 and 1999 in Britain but found the northern climate too cold for his liking.

During his years with Mick Easterby he built up a good partnership with Dee Pee Tee Cee, winning eight races on him. He won four times on another Easterby-trained stalwart, Hasta La Vista.

Dee Pee Tee Cee was one of Terry’s last rides, at Yarmouth on October 16, 2004. He retired at the end of that season, aged 54, but continued to work for Easterby, acting as travelling head groom.

In January 2010 Terry left Britain for the last time and returned to his native Australia, flying back to Brisbane to join his children there and seek a post in racing.
