John Stuart Isherwood had four wins over jumps, having ridden for the first time in public at Wetherby on December 27, 1976, when Red Marshall was unplaced in the Bradford Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2).
He had to wait more than two years for his first win but it finally came at Hexham on April 30, 1979 when Impus took the lead at the last flight and ran on strongly to take the Dipton Mill Novices’ Chase by four lengths. John had been placed on the six-year-old on his previous three starts so was not winning out of turn. He kept the ride, finishing second on each of his three subsequent runs, albeit beaten by 10, 20 and 5 lengths.
It looked as if John had ridden his second winner when Swift Albany got the better of a prolonged duel with Ridley Lamb on Golden Jest in the closing stages of the Castle Eden Novices’ Chase at Sedgefield on March 11, 1980 but the six-year-old had wandered left and right on the run-in and was disqualified and placed second.
Hence, it was not until the meeting at Newcastle on October 29, 1980 that John registered his second victory when Little Frenchman, owned and trained by Morpeth permit holder Effie Robson, stayed on strongly to land the Simonburn Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1) by a length and a half. John again kept the mount and was placed on the seven-year-old’s next three starts.
His next win was at Stockton on November 25, 1980, when Dunquetzal got up in the closing stages to take the Witherwack Opportunity Selling Handicap Chase by three-quarters of a length.
Finally, at Kelso on December 15, 1980, Little Frenchman obliged again with a comfortable 10-length victory in the Birgham Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1). Next time out they finished second at Newcastle but that was followed by two disappointing efforts.
John had his final ride on March 27, 1982 when Little Frenchman, having won three races earlier in the season under Chris Pimlott, led between the last two flights but was soon beaten and finished sixth in the Selbourne Engineering Handicap Hurdle at Hexham.
