Henry Ibbett was born in St Neots but brought up in Leicester where his father was a coachman.
He was apprenticed to Charles Jousiffe at Lambourn and rode his first winner on Lenwade, carrying 6st 13lb, in the Castle Ashby Welter Handicap at Northampton on 15 November 1889. He rode three winners the following year.
His four wins in 1891 included his most important success, a half-length victory on 7/1 joint favourite Comedy in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket.
He rode five winners in 1892, the last of which was St. Chad in the Deerhurst Selling Nursery Handicap at Worcester on 28 October.
He then moved to Europe and rode successfully in Germany and Hungary, winning the 1901 German Derby on Hagen.
Henry Ibbett died at Leicester on July 19, 1903, aged just 33
