Staff Ingham

1908 - 1977

Recognised as a great trainer, Stafford Walter Henry Ingham also rode on the Flat for three years - 1922 to 1925 - and therefore merits inclusion in Jockeypedia.

The son of an Epsom chemist, he was born at Epsom on July 4, 1908.

Having served his apprenticeship with Stanley Wootton, he won the 1925 Royal Hunt Cup on the King's Weathervane and the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

Though standing six feet tall, he then turned his considerable talent to jump racing (from 1927 - 1938) and became one of the best hurdle race riders in the country. He only raced over fences once, finishing second at Plumpton.

Staff then, in 1939, applied for his trainer's licence.

He was an R.A.F. Squadron Leader during the war after which he carried on as before.

He trained the winners of the Cambridgeshire, Cesarewitch (twice), Great Voltigeur, Imperial Cup, Ebor & Triumph Hurdle plus many others.

Staff Ingham died in Epsom Hospital on February 16, 1977, aged 68.

His biggest wins as a jockey were:

Royal Hunt Cup in 1923 on Weathervane

Lancashire Hurdle (twice) in 1931 on Gay Light and 1934 on Mandritsra

Victory Hurdle in 1933 on Gay Light

County Handicap Hurdle in 1935 on Polly Stephens

Imperial Cup in 1936 on Negro
