Ask nature photographers. They’ll tell you that nature shoots are as good a reason to get excited as any other event in life. But along with that eagerness comes the penchant to forget a number of things, especially those that aren’t directly connected to your camera gear. Many inexperienced photographers only realize this when they’re out in the great outdoors.

Here are a few things to check off your list.

Water bottles

Nature shoots often involve hiking. When the sun’s out, you may get pretty thirsty. Odds are there won’t be a convenience store for miles. Always bring with you a water bottle so you can rehydrate out in the field.

Towels

Again, all that walking and heat may make you sweaty, and you wouldn’t want to get all that acidic sweat on your precious camera and gear. Bring a towel and keep your hands slip-free, because God-forbid, you lose grip of your camera while taking pictures.

Sunscreen and insect repellant

These are two of the must-haves, whether you’re a nature photographer, or simply going on a nature hike for obvious reasons. You wouldn’t want to return to civilization with a lot of bites to show for.

Sunglasses

Mostly for desert shoots, sunglasses protect your eyes. And you need your eyes. It’s best to have a pair around, especially in desert shoots with the sun up high and glaring down.
