Joshua Caesar O. Elegado, I-BA Philosophy, Modern Philosophy, Extended Explanatory Critical Paper, The Matrix
Main Points
The first point, the fate of the humans, that the future of humanity was decided, it was a top-notch technological advancement created by humans through the peak of the most intellectual capacity of man, to the extent that it had created an evolution of the world. The setting was all about the future, an ugly future where humans are no longer humans are in control, a place where it is dystopian all over. All of such were possible due to the computer system taking over the people, in simple words, the computers are superior and are living above humans, human-created artificial intelligence, artificial intelligence outsmarted humans, as if humans were a mistake. Second point, the dream is the reality, to prove how and why is, what is real in the first few parts of the movie, we thought that it was actually real, but is not in later parts of the movie, that is was not actually real, that it was all impression of the mind, as of interpreted by the brain, and that reality of what we sense, what we perceive is limited to the world we only know. The existence of the matrix was the reason why humans were captive from seeing the reality, matrix was a system, like a system whereas is as of this moment, like our government, social hierarchy, religion, etc. Matrix made humans blind, it is the ideal reality of humans, where humans saw it as a perfect world living in a non-real world. The matrix was so good that make humans delusional, to the extent that humans fight for it, humans insist that that so-called reality is a place for them to stay. Reality is ugly as saw in the movie, and it will become no matter what, it will, and it shall like a prophecy. The last point, the prophecy is real, it will come, and it shall come, no stopping such, there will be this man of prophecy to cause an event, and another to end it, that is just how we balance society from exceeding their kind, evilly.
Commentary
How can we know what is real is true?
Using Descartes’ rationalism, pertaining to the existence of the cogito, where the idea of such, will become real, based on identifying what is real. The certainty of such, when having confusion in a dream that seems so real, and can not be distinguished, in that matter, the very thing that we can be certain is when something is clear and distinct, it is real and must be real. Our mind creates that reality, you have been shot by a gun in a dream, your real physical body receives damage, that is how certain your mind is how defining your reality even in the mind. What you see, is an impression of your mind, interpreted by the brain for what limitations you only know. There would be no way to be deceived, nor confusion of what you are into through the mind, since your mind holds the certainty.
Using the perspective of Hegel, dialectics, as of my first point at the main point paragraph above, will be articulated here, there is a process, first, we saw humans as ordinary as today’s era, ordinary needs some evolution in order to improve, time leap has befallen, jumping into the year where dystopian happening are actually occurring. It turns out it was the reality all along, humans are at the peak of their civilization, hence, computers and AI are the ones who are actually controlling the world, back then only the world has control over computers, but now it was reciprocated. Then there was a prophecy, a promised one, to destroy the ugly reality, making it perfuming, and setting the ideal of masses. It is real in a sense of a prophetic idea, it may not be seen as of today, yet, we can be certain that it will come for it is meant to happen, that is the reality we can not seem to escape when it is there. It is an evolution that is inevitable, inescapable, and shall come. It may not be the final, but is, yet it is still a process.
To combine the two perspectives, the reality is true even in the dream state, the clear and distinct are enough reasons for one idea to be certain, in accordance to Descartes, on the other hand, when we say the reality of the future may dictate, is actually true, for this certain reason; there is a prophecy, we may not know now, but it is still befalling, on what proof? On the continuous evolution of man, dialectics, and only time will tell when the people had freed their minds. To entail both arguments, we can formulate the validity of the future is real, and it will become, only in the mind that is real, yet the external realm will follow unto that mind. The peak of human civilization is meant to happen.
To conclude, first we have stated the main points of the film, extract its philosophical matters, formulating a new, and answered the philosophical question.
In life, we must always doubt where the reality is supposed to be is, are we free? I think not, but our mind, may or may not choose the red pill, and with all of that reasons, I hereby end my paper, “Free your mind”.
