I believe that physical education classes have the ability to extend and enhance lessons from the classroom. Years of evidence has shown a clear positive link between physical activity and academic performance. I am enthusiastic about any opportunity to bring traditional classroom lessons into the gym. I have incorporated spelling, reading, fractions, addition, money, graphing, time, and many other concepts into games. I have posted a few examples below of these activities.
Students bowl a ball toward bottles scattered across the floor. When they knock over a bottle, they bring it back to their group, unscramble the letters and attempt to spell one of the words on their worksheet.
For this video, the game was played with fitness related vocabulary but it has been adapted to include spelling words and important vocabulary words for classroom units.
Instead of bowling the balls like the previous game, students will use their kicking skills to knock over bottles. When they are successful, the student brings the bottle back to their team and places the fraction inside on the number line. Some of the fractions fit on the number line while others did not. The first team to complete the number line wins.
In this activity, students roll the dice to determine the number of repetitions each group member must complete. Once everyone has completed their reps, one student reaches in to the cup and pulls out a letter. This process continues until a group believes that they have correctly spelled the spelling word for that round.
During this game, students practice their overhand throwing techniques to throw beanbags (trash) over the volleyball net (fence) and onto the other side of the court (neighbor's yard). At the end of each round, students were asked to graph their beanbags by color.
Students form groups and begin flipping bottles. When they flip the bottle over and land it within three attempts, they can claim the money under the spot marker. However, they do not how much money is under each marker or if another team has already claimed it. In order to win each round, the team must collect enough money to correctly answer the word problem on the screen.
