Mentors

Mentors will work one-on-one or in small groups with new or novice scientific reviewer(s) to review 3 – 4 manuscripts over a 6 month period. A scaffolded approach allows a decrease in dependence as the mentee develops proficiency.

  • Participate in mentor/mentee training, which will be offered online and will provide participants with resource materials and list of expectations for mentors and mentees

  • Review three manuscripts, approximately one every two months; Associate Editors will invite either the mentor (Manuscript 1) or the mentees (Manuscripts 2 and 3) and each mentor/mentee triad will complete the reviews together

  • Provide decreasing amounts of scaffolded guidance on each subsequent manuscript: fully collaborate with mentees on Manuscript 1, read and provide feedback to mentees on their independent reviews on Manuscripts 2 and 3 (one per mentee)

  • Provide mentees with resources (links to articles and websites, recommendations for books or short courses, etc.) as appropriate to help mentees develop expertise and reviewing skills

Mentees

This program is for novice reviewers who are interested in enhancing their editorial abilities of scientific manuscripts. By working with a mentor, mentees will progress through 3-4 documents over a 6-month period.

  • Participate in training with mentor/mentee triad (1 mentor, 2 mentees), which will be offered online and will provide participants with resource materials and list of expectations for mentors and mentees

  • Complete reviews of three manuscripts with scaffolded support from assigned mentor, going from guided co-authoring of a review for Manuscript 1 to completing a review independently, with feedback from mentor, for Manuscripts 2 and 3

  • Follow up on guidance and make use of recommended resources provided by mentor

  • Submit review for one manuscript (Manuscript 2 or 3) in ScholarOne

Coaches

Coaches are former journal editors and associate editors or experienced former program participants. Coaches in the JEE Mentored Reviewer Program will support 2-3 triad teams (with each team having one mentor and two mentees) through the duration of the program. Coaches will monitor team progress by collecting and processing team feedback. Through this feedback and meetings with the team or individuals, coaches will support positive outcomes for program participants.

  • Collect and review survey feedback from triad after each manuscript review

  • Meet with individual team members (as needed)

  • Attend triad team meetings (as needed)

  • Provide guidance to mentors (as needed)

  • Collect formative memos about the progress, challenges, and successes of each team each they complete the program

Process

Selections and Pairing

    • Mentors will be recruited through nominations by members of the JEE editorial board.

    • Mentees should apply to participate; applications will be considered once/year, roughly at the beginning of the calendar year.

    • Mentees can be graduate students, postdocs, and faculty new to engineering education research, particularly those who are not already members of an engineering education department, program or center and who do not have ready access to a community of practice in engineering education research.

    • Two mentees will be assigned to each mentor; mentors and mentees will be paired from different institutions to expand expertise beyond departments and programs.

    • Mentors and mentees will be matched based on their areas of expertise and level of expertise of mentees (pairing more experienced with more novice mentees if possible).

Assignments

  • Associate editors (AEs) will invite mentor/mentee triads to review manuscripts; Editor will help identify appropriate manuscripts for mentor/mentee triads based on their expertise and interests

  • Mentor accesses manuscript in ScholarOne and distributes it to mentees for Manuscript 1; mentees access Manuscripts 2 and 3 and distribute to their triad

  • Three manuscripts assigned to each mentor/mentee triad over about a six month period

  • A list of mentors and mentees and their expertise will be provided to AEs, which will be updated with information on which triads are currently handling manuscripts (so no additional manuscripts will be assigned concurrently)

Reviews

  • Mentor is responsible for submitting review in ScholarOne in a timely manner for the first of the three manuscripts assigned to the mentor/mentee triad.

  • Mentees complete reviews with scaffolded support: full collaboration with mentor on Manuscript 1, supervised mentee review on Manuscripts 2 and 3.

  • Manuscript 1 is completed collaboratively (i.e., joint writing in a Google Doc); mentor submits one review for team.

  • Manuscripts 2 and 3 are completed individually by mentees and reviewed by mentor; each mentee will submit one manuscript to ScholarOne.
