Grant Proposal Reviewer Training Program

Project Timeline

Recognizing that scholarship benefits from peer review at both the development and dissemination stages, we are extending the Journal of Engineering Education (JEE)'s Mentored Reviewer Program to grant proposal review.

The Grant Proposal Mentored Reviewer Program is intended to coach new or novice reviewers (with some level of experience with engineering education research but minimal reviewing experience) through the review process that supports funding agencies in distributing grant monies to the most promising scholarship in engineering education. Small teams of reviewers are matched with former program officers to learn about the proposal review process and develop skills that support funding decisions. Teams will peer review three proposals submitted to the National Science Foundation (NSF) but which are not currently under review. Participants will then serve on a mock panel, discussing six proposals (including the three reviewed with their team) and then writing a panel summary.

All mentors and mentees will be acknowledged at the ASEE annual meeting and receive a certificate recognizing accomplishments through their participation in the program the previous year. Mentees will participate in online training, review practice, and in a mock virtual panel.

This Program is a competitive program for mentees, with accolades for professional development and leadership.

Mentors

Former program officers serving as mentors will work in small groups with new or novice scientific reviewer(s) to review 3 proposals in a 6 week period. A scaffolded approach allows a decrease in dependence as the mentee develops proficiency.
