As I began to invest more deeply into the role text, color, context, intent, and emotion all played in my process, I found line. Inspired by Jean Mitchell Basquiat and Jackson Pollock, I wanted to create a visual language of where I connect formal ideas with conceptual ideas in one space.
Word do not just exist, from the physical form, to the meaning, to the context of how and when they are used, to the interpretation and intent of the words, to the passing and shifting of the meaning of words from one generation to the next, to the identities we place on our bodies, to how sounds and environment can change words. Words are amazing, and we owe it all to line.
In order for a written language to exist, line must exist first, line and time are inseparable, in order for lines to exist, in order for language to mean anything, it must be understood in relation to time. And us, we must exist as well, in a specific time and specific place for a language to mean much. We are nothing without our language, but first we must acknowledge the power lines posses, in the marks we make that make history a thing. Historically speaking to lose a language is to strip someone of their humanity.
As I moved into education I gained a new appreciation of the importance of owning a language. My work seeks to explore how language, line, sound, movement, and color can be, and have been, used to construct boundaries, yet simultaneously are the tools of liberation and freedom.
