With daily homework assignments, how do we communicate if our child has a conflict?
In 5th grade, all students should feel empowered to communicate this with their teacher before leaving school if they know they will not have the time to complete their task or the next day if something unexpected happened in the evening. Parents can reference the homework calendar (linked on the homepage) to reference future assignments.
When is snack time?
All students are welcome to carry a small and easy to eat snack in their backpack. All 5th graders are invited to have snack during Closing Circle or during transitions as needed after lunch as long as it is fast, utensil free, and eaten respectfully.
Can we request an early-in-the-year meeting with one of you prior to the 1st conference?
Any meetings outside of the parent conference schedule are to be made at the discretion of the teachers you are communicating with. We ask that you email first, and help guide us with the questions or reasons you would like to meet so we can best decide if and when to meet and how to prepare.
Are there extra hours at lunch with teachers for kids to catch up if they miss something? (for a holiday, cross country meet, etc.)
If this is something your child is interested in, they are encouraged to speak to their content teachers and as a team they will arrange a time to make sure the student is all caught up.
Where can I find the list of my child's class?
Please see the page (Class Lists) on this website.
Content Specific questions:
Social Studies: since you cover over 200 years, what gets skipped? What time periods are big units of focus?
Big Units of study
Second Advisory (1st advisory they have Science) - Westward Expansion, causes and consequences of the Civil War/ Reconstruction , railroads - usually incorporated into the Civil War Unit
Fourth Advisory - immigrations (west coast vs east coast), The Great Migration and the Harlem Renaissance, The Great Depression, WWII, Civil Rights Movement
What gets skipped?
We will spend at least a day on each of the items listed below, but do not do a deep dive into them. If we have an event that is celebrating an "Anniversary", that is different - we also stop to discuss world events that are considered "teachable moments".

Can you translate Common Core Math to help us parents who learned "the old way" ?
On the Math page of this website you will find Parent Resource pages. They are a terrific resource for a Unit by Unit breakdown of all Eureka Math lessons to accompany your child's work in school and at home. On these tip sheets you will find overviews, sample problems, ways to talk about it at home, and defined key terms.
