Getting to know your Gmail:
First we will start with the top left hand corner of the page which should have three or four blue links located in the same place as the blue links that I mentioned earlier to get to Gmail. You should see Google: Calendar, Documents, Reader, Sites, Web. Then right below those links should be three sidebar items:
All about tasks:
The task gadget is for you to help remind yourself of tasks that you need to do. If you want to add a task then click next to the little square at the top of the blue box underneath “Tasks: (your name) list.” (hit enter when your done to enter in your task). If you want to add more details to that task then click the arrow pointing right at the very end of the “text box” (where you just entered your task) on the right side. If you want to return back to your tasks then click the blue link at the bottom of the box (only if your in details) it will take you back to your tasks list. You can click the box next to each task to “check it off.” To add more tasks either click under the last task that you have, or at the bottom is a tool bar. The plus button will add a new task, the trash can will delete a task (make sure you click the task first, it will appear highlighted).
The dots with lines icon (farthest right on the tool bar) will have different options for your tasks: such as the following....
Last but not least the actions button on the opposite side of the tool bar will have options for:
Google chat:
You may also chat in Gmail, if you look on the left sidebar at the bottom. Look for “chat” there under your name should be a list of your contacts. On the left side of each contact there will be a small a gray dot, or a green dot.
The green dot will mean that they are online.
The gray dot means that they are not online at the time.
To chat with them click on their name, and in the right bottom hand corner a box will appear. You may then start typing your message in the box, then hit enter to send it. If you click on their name and it brought you to a new email message with their name in the address bar, that means they are not online at the time but you can contact them through email.
If you are having trouble with chat and you may not be finding all of the items mentioned above, them you may have to "Invite them to chat" and to do that, in the search box in under the chat tab, search the name of one of your contacts and find were you send an invite to chat. (Note you don't need to this every time you want to chat to that person). Now when they visit there Gmail, next time, in their chat tab there should be a request to chat from you. Next time you are both on you will be able to see that each other are both on, and to be able to chat. If you want their name to appear in the chat list every time then search their name and then you will see their name and email address, find in the blue boxes right hand margin, "show in chat list" you want to click that. Then you are all set.
