The Women in Business Club at London Business School is hosting the 24th EQUALL conference on March 7th, 2024. New piece in The Conversation

Julie (Nhu) Nguyen and Ivona, along with their collaborators Frederic Godart and Yuval Engal, recently published a piece in The Conversation regarding their research on benevolent sexism. Specifically, it discusses how 'Benevolent sexism in startups widens the gender gap by advantaging men over women'. You can read this article on The Conversation website.

Ivona to speak at the University of Amsterdam

On February 2nd, 2024, Ivona will be presenting on "Parental Leaves and Gender Equality: The Effect of Parental Leaves on Women’s and Men’s Careers" at the University of Cambridge's Judge Business School.

The GEDI Lab was happy to welcome guest speaker Dr. Peter Fisher on January 26th, 2024During the lab meeting, Peter spoke on "Toward a Better Understanding of the Design of Forced-Choice Personality Assessments through Computational Modeling". We wish Peter well as this work progresses, and are thankful for his time sharing this project with us!

On January 16th, 2024, Ivona will be presenting on "How Warmth Stereotypes Undermine Women at Work: The Case of Women with Mandarin Accent and East Asian Women Professors" at the Amsterdam Business School. She is looking forward to her visit with the University of Amsterdam and its business school and department of psychology!

On November 3rd, 2023, the GEDI Lab was fortunate to host Dr. Samantha Hancock and Sam Plotnick. These two researchers shared about their work on neurodiversity in the workplace, including future projects and papers. We are excited to follow along as these progress, and are thankful for their time with us!

New paper published!

A paper led by Julie Nguyen, co-authored with Ivona, Yuval Engel, and Frederic Godart, is now published! Beginning as Julie's Masters thesis, the paper, "Benevolent Sexism and the Gender Gap in Startup Evaluation,' is now open-access in Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. Read it on the website here.

New paper published!

A paper that Ivona  wrote with Drs. Anja Krstic, Deborah Powell, and Yujie Zhan, is now published! Titled "Supporting women during motherhood and caregiving necessary, but not sufficient: The need for men to become equal partners in childcare", this paper is published in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and is open-access, available to read here.

Congratulations, Janice!

Janice Lam, a doctoral student and the lab manager of the GEDI Lab, was awarded a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship beginning in September 2024. This federal award recognizes Janice's research accomplishments and will provide funding until the end of her PhD. Congratulations, Janice!

New paper published!

A paper that Drs. Winny Shen, Tanja Hentschel, and Ivona wrote, is now published! Published in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, "Leading through the uncertainty of COVID ‐19: The joint influence of leader emotions and gender on abusive and family‐supportive supervisory behaviours" is open-access and may be read on the journal's website. 

New paper published!

A paper written by Drs. Samantha Hancock, Winny Shen, and Ivona, is now published! Titled "Women With Mandarin Accent in the Canadian English-Speaking Hiring Context: Can Evaluations of Warmth Undermine Gender Equity?", this project began as Sam's Masters thesis under Ivona's supervision. Now, this paper is published in the Psychology of Women Quarterly and may be read on the journal's website.

On March 10th, 2023, Dr. Vanessa Conzon will be presenting her research in our GEDI Lab meeting.  Discussing "Transcending Role Conflict Through Temporal Sovereignty", Dr. Conzon will share with us how workers can transcend work and non-work role conflict while maintaining engagement in these roles. New paper published!

A paper written by Winny Shen, Janice Lam, Christianne Varty, Anja Krstic, and Ivona is now published! Titled 'Diversity climate affords unequal protection against incivility among Asian workers: The COVID-19 pandemic as a racial mega-threat', this paper focuses on the experiences of East and Southeast Asian workers in Canada and the USA during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.  on her new publication! This paper was published in Applied Psychology: An International Review and is open-access on the journal's website.

On February 17, 2023, Dr. Anyi Ma will be presenting some of her research on "The CADDIS model of agency for gender and leadership: How it was developed, how it leads to new insights for gender and leadership, and future directions". Jessie Kim, a research assistant and member of the GEDI Lab, has successfully completed her MSc in Organizational Behaviour! She worked under the supervision of Dr. Eddy Ng at the Smith School of Business at Queen's University. Congratulations, Jessie!

Janice to speak as part of OSSU Panel

On September 29, 2022, Janice Lam will be speaking as part of a panel at Ontario SPOR Support Unit (OSSU)'s Research Day. Panelists specifically will discuss how they used their awarded OSSU EMPOWER Awards (more information about the awards on the OSSU website)  to help with knowledge translation of their research. Janice was one of several individuals with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health that created the Youth Wellness Quest, a mental health literacy tool for youth by youth. They used their OSSU EMPOWER Award to create an online version of this tool. If interested in attending, Janice will be speaking in the morning session between 10:30 and 11:20 AM EST. Congratulations goes to Dr. Christianne Varty, who successfully defended her PhD thesis titled “I’ll believe it when I see it: Widespread use of diversity statements undermines perceived sincerity and organizational attractiveness”on Friday September 9th, 2022.  We're excited for her as she finishes this chapter. We are excited for Samantha Hancock, who has accepted a tenure-track assistant professor position with Western University's DAN Department of Management.& Organizational Studies. Currently a PhD candidate, Sam's position with Western will begin on July 1, 2022. Congratulations, Sam!

Owen Angus-Yamada completed his Master of Science in Management degree at Brock University! Study at the Goodman School of Business under the supervision of Dr. Adam Kanar, his MSc thesis was titled "Objects in your rear may be less important than they appear: How objects in candidates’ video interview backgrounds influence interviewers’ perceptions of fit and hiring recommendations." Congratulations, Owen!

Ivona Announced as Chair-Elect for CSIOP

At the 2022 Canadian Psychological Association's Annual Convention, Ivona was announced to be Chair-Elect for the Canadian Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (CSIOP) section. This means that for the 2023-2024 year, Ivona will be the Chair for CSIOP. Congratulations, Ivona!

Jessie Kim received the Best Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Poster Award in the Canadian Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology section at the Canadian Psychological Association's 2022 Annual Convention! Titled "How changes in prevalence impact perceptions of the severity of sexual harassment", this work was conducted with Dr. Lindie Liang. Congratulations, Jessie!

At the Canadian Psychological Association's 2022 Annual Convention, Janice Lam was awarded the RHR Kendall-Evans Award! This is a prestigious student paper award from the Canadian Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Janice's paper was titled "Male allyship: The consequences of communality perceptions for men's careers," this work being conducted in collaboration with Drs. Ivona Hideg, Janine Bosak, and Madeline Heilman.  Congratulations, Janice!

Welcome to Schulich and the GEDI Lab!

We are excited to welcome Jessie Kim and Heather Wong to the GEDI Lab! Both are incoming PhD students in the Schulich School of Business's ORGS area (beginning Fall 2022) and will be working with Ivona on various researh projects. Both also have previous connections to the lab; Jessie has been a research assistant with the GEDI Lab the last few years, and Heather and Ivona are currently collaborating on a project together. We look forward to seeing both students progress with their research over the next few years!

New Paper Published

Congratulations to Janice Lam, a PhD student with the GEDI Lab, on her new publication! Since 2015, she has been involved in developing a mental health literacy resource for youth with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. In this new paper, she and her coauthors detail the process, showing how youth may lead and be involved from the conceptualization to the publication and dissemination of youth resources.

An editorial that Ivona wrote for the Academy of Management Journa (AMJ)l with coauthors, Elizabeth Umphress, Floor Rink, and Cindy Muir (Zapata), is now published! Titled Insights on How We Try to Show Empathy, Respect, and Inclusion in AMJ, it may be read here.

Upcoming Academy of Management Journal Workshop

Ivona has helped organize an online professional development workshop with the Academy of Management Journal (AMJ) on transparency and rigor in empirical research. Taking place on February 28, 2022, this workshop is meant to discuss best practices and tips for research transparency, along with how these issues may be approached for AMJ paper submissions. New paper accepted for publication!

Ivona, Winny Shen, and Samantha Hancock have a new paper accepted for publication! An interdisciplinary review and research agenda for non-native accents in the workplace, this paper will be published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior in the future. More may be read about it here.

An assistant professor in psychology at New York University Abu Dhabi, she will be speaking to us on Friday October 22, 2021 about her latest research regarding workplace norms' role in producing and maintaining gender disparities. Ivona to speak at CYC webinar on Women, Gender, and Economic Equity in the Workforce

On Sunday June 13th, from 3:00 to 4:30 PM EST, Ivona will be speaking as a panelist for the Toronto-St. Paul's Constituency Youth Council (CYC)'s webinar on Women, Gender, and Economic Equity in the Workforce.  The objective of this event is to offer youth, the Toronto-St. Paul’s community and beyond the opportunity to listen in on the discussion with women from a range of professional backgrounds on what it will take to realize economic success for women as we recover from the pandemic. This event will be held on Zoom and broadcast on Facebook Live, the webpage for the latter found here.

Congratulations goes to Janice Lam, who defended her master thesis successfully on September 3, 2020! We wish her the best as she continues on to the Schulich School of Business at York University for her doctoral studies in the fall. 

New lab name!

After discussion among lab members concerning the research conducted in the lab and future directions, it was decided to rename the EDGE Lab to become the GEDI Lab. GEDI (pronounced like jedi) stands for Gender, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. 

Victoria to speak on a Silicon Halton webinar

Victoria Daniel, an affiliate student with the EDGE lab, will be a panelist on the Silicon Halton webinar, Managing Change on the Path of Recovery, occurring from 12 - 1 PM on June 18th, 2020. This webinar discusses how businesses can adapt to change as business begins to reopen after the COVID-19 lockdown. Victoria will be speaking on her recent work on work and family.  A free event, you can listen in here.

A paper based on Julie Nguyen's MSc work, "The Gender Gap in Start-up Funding: The Role of Investors' Benevolent Sexism" was awarded the Kauffman Foundation Best Student Paper Award for 2020 from the Gender, Diversity, and Entrepreneurship division of AOM! Cowritten with Yuval Engel, Frederic Godart, and Ivona, this is an amazing achievement. We are so proud of Julie and all her work! Congratulations!

AMJ Paper and Idea Development Workshop

The Academy of Management Journal (AMJ) editorial team - which includes Ivona - invite faculty and doctoral students to attend a paper and idea development workshop! Dr. Anja Krstic, Ivona's first PhD student, celebrated her PhD convocation on October 26, 2019. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow with Ivona. Congratulations, Anja! We are all very proud of you. 

New in press paper at OBHDP!

A paper written by Ivona and Dr. Anne Wilson has been accepted by Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes! Discussing employment equity (EE) policies and how reminders of past injustice may undermine such policies, it is currently in press and may be read on the Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes website.

A paper of Ivona's, written with Winny Shen from the University of Waterloo, has been published! Discussing the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions and the role of benevolent sexism, it  may be read on the Journal of Leadership & Organizational Studies website.

Congratulations to Ivona, who has been appointed as an Associate Editor for the Academy of Management Journal! On top of that, she has also been added to the editorial board of Administrative Science Quarterly!

The EDGE Lab attended a successful 2019 SIOP Conference!

 We had yet another very successful SIOP conference! Our lab members showcased their fantastic work.  Sam, along with Dr. Winny Shen,  organized a very successful and thought provoking symposium entitled “Women leaders: Challenges and opportunities in attaining and maintaining leadership” Great job Sam! Christianne presented our work on glass cliff in the same symposium and that work garnered a lot of interests! Anja presented a poster at an 8:30am session; yet, despite such an early time, she had tons of interest in her work on paternity leaves and had to stay well behind the scheduled time for the poster session. Ivona was an invited panelist in fantastic a session organized by Dr. Jana Raver “Navigating troubled waters: A forum to advance research on motherhood and work” All in all, a very successful and inspiring SIOP!

Anja's paper judged as one of the best accepted papers at the 2019 Academy of Management!

 Congratulations to Anja for having her AOM paper, which is based on her doctoral dissertation work  “The Effect of Taking a Paternity Leave on Men's Career Outcomes: The Role of Communality Perceptions" being judged as one of the best accepted papers at AOM! This paper will be published in the Proceedings of the 2019 Academy of Management Meeting. This is a super nice recognition for Anja’s work.

Ivona, Anja, Raymond, and Tanya's paper chosen as a 2019 Distinguished Winner of the Responsible Research in Management Award!

Ivona, Anja, Raymond, and Tanya are super excited and honoured that their paper, “The unintended consequences of maternity leaves: How agency interventions mitigate the negative effects of longer legislated maternity leaves,” published in 2018 in the Journal of Applied Psychology, has been chosen as a 2019 Distinguished Winner of the Responsible Research in Management Award co-sponsored by the International Association for Chinese Management (IACMR) and the Community for Responsible Research in Business and Management (RRBM) (value: $2,000 USD). There will be an Award ceremony at AOM in Boston in August 2019 and we hope that many friends, colleagues, and collaborators can join us in celebrating this exciting moment.
