Who We Are

Our church's mission:

We are a people of God, living and sharing the love of Christ and reflecting that love in words and actions.

MISSION

Assist students in elementary, intermediate and high school to develop and improve study skills and general knowledge in their school work.

The Lillian Maeda Learning Center is an after-school program located on the grounds of Iao United Church of Christ (Iao UCC) in Wailuku, Maui. Kanda Hall includes a kitchen and large study area. Students in grades K to 12 are welcome, provided they submit a signed consent form from a parent for each student attending the program. Sign-in sheets record attendance. The number of participants for the 2018-19 school year is limited to 25. We currently average about a dozen to fifteen students per day and have had some new ones recently. The program started at Iao UCC many years ago. Lillian Maeda, an elementary teacher and the first woman Moderator of this church, started the tutoring program with other church members. The program carries her name. Please check this link to learn more about this remarkable woman educator.

The program runs only on Mondays and Wednesdays during the academic school year with the exception of holidays. Volunteers offer a nutritional snack at the end of time for assisting students with homework assignments or other forms of tutoring. Reading is encouraged, and a small library of books at different reading levels is available. Laptop computers enable Internet research.

Tutors are volunteers with some educational background. UH-Maui College's ETS program is providing a tutor on Wednesdays this school year to work with older students from grades 6 to 12.

Iao UCC strives to provide a safe and structured learning environment for local youth. All are welcome and discrimination based on religion, gender, age, color, race or ethnicity is never acceptable.
