I have been a Track & Field Official with the IHSA since 1999 after several years as a high school track coach. (I gave up coaching when I went back to school to work on my Masters Degree, and once I completed that there were no coaching positions open..."Hello Officiating!")
Since becoming an official, I have been honored to serve as a starter at both the Boys and Girls State Track Meets in Charleston as well as working for several years in the Clerks Tent. In cross country, I have served at the state meet as a Starter, Assistant Referee, and Head Referee at the Detweiller Park in addition to working for several years as an umpire and clerk. For the IESA, I have served as a Starter, Referee, and Head Clerk at the State Cross Country Meet at Maxwell Park in Bloomington-Normal. I also currently am serving on the IESA Cross Country Advisory Committee.
In my younger days, I ran cross country at PORTA High School, where I am proud to say I was a part of 2 teams with top 10 team placings at Detweiller Park. I also ran track at PORTA, and although I never competed at the state meet in Charleston, my school record (from 1984!) in the 800 m still stands! Ask me about it sometime, and I'll tell you how fast I used to be.
When I'm not on the track, I can be found teaching high school physics and chemistry at my alma mater of PORTA High School in Petersburg. My wife and I are the proud parents of Abbey (a chemist in St Louis) and Gabe (a CyberSecurity major at Southeast Missouri State), both of whom enjoy running, too.
