Safety Information
Welcome to Atami
Atami is a safe and popular resort city on the Pacific coast of Japan. No particular safety concerns are anticipated during the conference. However, participants should be aware of natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and severe weather, which occasionally occur in Japan.
Earthquakes and Tsunamis
Japan is located in an active seismic region, and minor earthquakes are relatively common. Most are harmless and cause little disruption. In the unlikely event of a strong earthquake or tsunami warning, please follow the instructions of conference staff, hotel personnel, and local authorities.
Participants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with emergency exits and evacuation routes at their accommodation. When the participants encounter a strong earthquake outside, they are encouraged to run away from seaside to higher ground to escape from a tsunami.
Mt. Fuji
Mt. Fuji can be viewed from many locations in and around Atami. Please note that the official climbing season ends in September, and all trails leading to the summit are closed during the conference period. Climbing Mt. Fuji during the off-season is not permitted and can be dangerous. Participants should enjoy the mountain from designated viewpoints only.
Wildlife
Asian black bears occur in parts of the Izu Peninsula, including mountainous areas around Atami, and occasional sightings have been reported. Participants planning field observations, hiking, or nature excursions should check local safety information and take appropriate precautions.
