PhD Student
I was born in Vitoria-Gasteiz, capital of the Basque country, in 1995. From a very young age, I decided that I wanted to become a scientist. I was excited to learn about how things worked, especially those related to biology, most specifically, genetics. After finishing high school, I moved to Lleida and graduated in Biotechnology by the University of Lleida (UdL). To complete my knowledge about genetics I moved then to Barcelona where I get my master´s degree on Genetics and Genomics. The master's thesis helped me decide on my future steps. I have always been interested in human genetic variability, its genetic bases and its molecular consequences.
In 2019, I had the opportunity to join, as a PhD student, the new project of the young PI, Urko M Marigorta, who at that time was returning to Spain from his stay in Atlanta as a postdoc. My thesis titled “Characterization of the molecular pathways that drive genetic risk in inflammatory bowel disease” is about dissecting the molecular bases of the biological pathways that drive IBD risk. In short, we are interested in the biological functions of the genetic variants captured by GWAS. For so, we integrate functional genetics and transcriptomics to decipher the biology that drive the risk of modern complex diseases.
When I am not doing science, you can find me either with a controller or a beer in my hands (sometimes both). I have always liked video games; I started playing when Lucas arts adventure games were trendy. I think that defines my absurd and sarcastic sense of humour (look behind you, there is three-headed monkey!). Now I am more of playing co-op online shooter games like Destiny 2.
