MEN'S WORK

WWW.INSITEintegrative.com        EdGeratyLCSW-C@proton.me

Men'sWork ,provided by INSITE Integrative Services LLC, is a confidential individual and group psychotherapy service specific to the psycho-social needs of men at all ages of the life span. MensWork recognizes and helps treat the many issues that affect men in their daily lives. Parenting skills to questions about intimacy; sex addiction to anger management; mid-life crisis to grief and loss, concerns about physical health and spirituality.

Isolation and lack of community:  If you are like most men in our culture, you're pretty emotionally isolated and don't share much about your feelings. Men are raised to be "overly independent" and not pay attention to their emotions. This creates a sense of aloneness and difficulty forming relationships. Repressed emotions also are a set up for physical illnesses. Learn more about men and lonliness.

Depression and anxiety: It’s not that more men are anxious or depressed these days. It’s that anxiety and depression are finally being acknowledged as more than “women’s issues.” In a world in which men have for so long been expected to be strong and silent, those with anxiety or depression might hold those feelings tight and self-medicate. This can lead to addictions, violence, relationship problems, and other debilitating behaviors.   What does depression look like in men?

Stress: Managing stress has become a full-time job for many. The stress of finances, employment, education, and relationships can weigh heavily and have an adverse effect on men’s physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. Now many men recognize they’re living lives of quiet desperation. How to deal with common stressors?

Sexual compulsions/addictions: it’s estimated that up to 10% of men struggle with a sexual compulsion or addiction. It can manifest in a variety of ways: showing up as a fixation with Internet pornography, exhibitionism, promiscuity, obsessive masturbation, use of adult establishments, or pay for sex encounters. Learn more about sexual addictions.

Mid-Life/Quarter-Life crises: The stereotypical mid-life crisis in men includes fast cars, younger women, risk-taking, a second boyhood. These actions were often ways to buoy a man’s diminishing sense of strength, power, and significance. The reality of a mid-life crisis, while it may include some of these things, involves a bit more soul-searching.  Society’s expectations of men have changed over time as have traditional roles and rules. In the new millennium, courageous and thoughtful men embrace the aging process with dignity and move into deeper reflection and transformation. Learn more about midlife crisis.

Relationship Issues: Relationships where the mind, body, and spirit are fully involved, can’t thrive long on passion alone. They require work, nurturance, and skill in order to remain strong, loving, and growing. Relationship counseling can provide the knowledge and support relationships need to survive the test of time. Oftentimes, people enter relationships with excitement and hope, only to find themselves, at best, living with a sense of perpetual longing for something more or, at worst, harboring feelings of disillusionment, abandonment, and hostility.

Physical Health Issues:  Men throughout the life span can develop medical conditions and illnesses that are difficult to manage.  In our culture, men are supposed to be "strong" and "tough it out", not showing physical weakness, pain or physical vulnerabilities. But men are not robots, they are human, and experience all of the physical conditions that humans experience. Men tend to close down and isolate when ill or are in pain, or become angry and lash out at those around them.

I facilitate weekly Men's Therapy groups on Zoom.  If you live in one of the following states (MD, VA,DC,FL,WV,DE,or VT) and you are interested in joining one of the groups, please complete this Group Agreement Form and we can discuss further.  After completing the form,  email me at EdGeratyLCSW-C@proton.me

Your insurance usually covers a portion of the fee.  The group is designed for men who are going through life changes and who may be experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, isolation, or simply need support to grow personally, take risks,  and make necessary changes. It combines the principles of cognitive therapy with meditative practices and developing attitudes based on the cultivation of mindfulness.

Participants make a minimum 3 month (12 week) weekly commitment. After that time we hope you would continue with us.
