Higher Level (HL)

• In paper 1, both SL and HL students are presented with two previously unseen non-literary extracts or texts from different text types, each accompanied by a guiding question.

• HL students must write guided analyses of both non-literary extracts or texts separately

• Paper 1: Guided textual analysis (2 hours 15 minutes)

• Weight 35%

• Use the learner portfolio

• Paper 1 requires a guided analysis and students must practice finding a focus for this, which will often come from the guiding question.

• If students do not wish to write about the guiding question, they must focus their analysis with an alternative formal or technical focus.

Standard Level (SL)

• In paper 1, both SL and HL students are presented with two previously unseen non-literary extracts or texts from different text types, each accompanied by a guiding question.

• SL students are required to write a guided analysis of one of these.

• Paper 1: Guided textual analysis (1 hour 15 minutes)

• Weight 35%

• Use the learner portfolio

• Paper 1 requires a guided analysis and students must practice finding a focus for this, which will often come from the guiding question.

• If students do not wish to write about the guiding question, they must focus their analysis with an alternative formal or technical focus.
