Unit Introduction and Overview
Throughout the semester for mathematics. My partners and I have created 4 lesson plans with the unit focusing on fractions. In particular, inches, half inches, and quarter inches. To kick off the unit my partners and I did a mini lesson incorporating a children's literature book titled "Shark Lady" written by Jess Kneating. With this read aloud my partners and I were able to tie in fractions with sharks and how it is used and in the world around is. After this a per-assessment was made and given at the start. Once all the lessons were taught, a post-assessment was then administered.
Above is the Pre-Assessment
Massachusetts Curriculum Framework Standard(s):
MD.B.4. Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of objects using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Record and show the data by making a line plot (dot plot), where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units—whole numbers, halves, or fourths. (See Glossary for example.)
Vocabulary:
Inches
a unit of linear measure
Halves
either of two equal or corresponding parts into which something is or can be divided.
Rulers
a straight strip or cylinder of plastic, wood, metal, or other rigid material, typically marked at regular intervals, to draw straight lines or measure distances.
Measurement
the size, length, or amount of something, as established by measuring.
a unit or system of measuring
Fourths: an inch partitioned into 4 separate parts.
Learning outcome(s):
Students will be able able to use a ruler to measure inches and ½ inches using a ruler
Students will be able to see why it is important for scientists and researchers to measure the lengths of different sharks in the ocean.
Students will be able to use a ruler to measure sharks into fourths of an inch to understand how to properly use a ruler. (Partitioning into different parts.)
Lesson 1:
Instructional Method:
Gradual Release of Responsibility
Essential Question(s): (1 how, 1 why)
Why is it important to be able to know how to measure a shark?
How do we measure a shark?

MA.3.MD.B.4. Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of objects using rulers marked
with halves and fourths of an inch. Record and show the data by making a line plot (dot plot),
where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units—whole numbers, halves, or fourths.
Learning outcome(s):
1. Students will be able to understand why it is important for scientists/researchers to
understand why it is important to measure the different lengths of sharks.
2. Students will be able to understand why measurement is important to use by looking at
different examples of measurement being used in the real world. (Ex.
Construction/Building Materials, People’s Height)
3. Students will be able to use a ruler to measure sharks into whole inches, half inches and
quarter inches.
Essential Question(s): (1 how, 1 why)
1. Why is it important for scientists/researchers like Eugenie Clark to understand how to
measure sharks in terms of inches, half inches and fourths?
2. How do other people in the real world use measurement in their daily lives?
