What is Ikigai?|生きがいとは
Ikigai is a Japanese concept that refers to a subjective sense that one’s life is worth living. It includes feelings of meaning, purpose, motivation, fulfillment, and the perception that one’s existence has value.
Ikigai is closely related to well-being, meaning in life, purpose in life, motivation, and life satisfaction, but it is not identical to any single one of these concepts. In the Japanese context, ikigai has been understood as a multidimensional sense that one’s daily life, future direction, and social existence have meaning and value.
Ikigai-9 was developed to assess this multidimensional concept of ikigai in a concise and empirically usable form. The scale organizes ikigai into three aspects: positive feelings toward current life, positive attitudes toward the future, and recognition of the meaning of one’s existence.

1. Optimistic and Positive Feelings Toward Life

This aspect reflects positive feelings toward one’s current daily life, such as enjoyment, fulfillment, and satisfaction.

2. Active and Positive Attitudes Toward the Future
未来に対する積極的・肯定的姿勢
This aspect reflects motivation, hope, and a forward-looking attitude toward future life.

3. Recognition of the Meaning of One’s Existence
自己存在の意味の認識
This aspect reflects the sense that one’s existence has meaning in relation to others and society.

Why Use Ikigai-9?|Ikigai-9を用いる意義
Ikigai-9 provides a concise way to assess ikigai as a multidimensional construct. It can help researchers and practitioners examine how meaning, future orientation, social roles, and participation are related to well-being and health.
In occupational therapy, rehabilitation, and community-based practice, Ikigai-9 may be useful for understanding the subjective value of daily life, participation in meaningful activities, and the person’s sense of connection with others and society.
