Canterbury

Canterbury is of outstanding significance in the history of Christianity and Western canon law. With St Augustine’s mission (596) it became the centre of Roman Christianity in Britain. Its medieval archbishops were major figures in the Western Church, and the martyrdom of one of them, Thomas Becket, made it an international pilgrimage site. Since the Protestant Reformation it has become the centre of the global Anglican communion. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Canterbury provides a superb setting for the ICMCL.
