• What good visualizations do (clarity, context)

Use: Give to new staff, post in shared folders, distribute at meetings.

A quick reference for interpreting dashboards:

• “What does this metric measure?”

• “Why does it matter?”

• “What is a reasonable trend or red flag?”

Use: Pin in shared workspaces or Slack/Teams channels.

Small learning sessions where staff rotate through stations:

• Reading a chart

• Interpreting a scorecard

• Drafting a one-sentence insight (“What this tells us…”)

No expert needed: Use internal examples + pre-prepared prompts.

Step 1 — Baseline: Ask What Staff Already Know
Distribute a 5-question survey:

• How comfortable are you with basic charts?

• Can you interpret an indicator trend?

• Have you ever used data for decision-making?

• What data skills would help you most?

• What’s one data concern you have?

Use results to tailor future sessions.

Step 2 — Monthly Skill-Building Activities

Create a calendar with themes:
Month 1 — Reading charts with confidence
Month 2 — Asking the right questions of data
Month 3 — Storytelling fundamentals
Month 4 — Data ethics and privacy basics

Each theme can be supported with short internal sessions, lunch-and-learns, or even shared resources (e.g., short videos or articles).

Step 3 — Just-in-Time Mini Tutorials
Instead of large training sessions, offer short micro-lessons:

• How to read a line graph

• How to interpret a dashboard field

• Differences between correlation and causation

These can be recorded or facilitated live 

Data Buddy Pairing
Pair more confident learners with those newer to data — rotate monthly.

Data “Office Hours”
A monthly drop-in time where staff can share questions and learn together.

Daily Data Check (5 minutes):

• What story does it tell?
