The model of intercultural competence developed by Michael Byram, professor of education at Durham University in England claims that intercultural competence consists of five main elements, or ‘savoirs’, as he calls them: Attitudes (savoir être) • Knowledge (savoir) • Skills of interpreting and relating (savoir comprendre) • Skills of discovery and interaction (savoir apprendre/faire) • Critical cultural awareness (savoir s’engager) (e.g. Byram 1997).
