Getting to and around Maastricht

Below you can find two sections about travel to Maastricht, and to the venue.

First about how to get to Maastricht by plane, train or car.

Second how you can find your way around the city, and of course how you can get to the conference locations.

At the bottom there are some detailed descriptions on how you can reach the venue by car.

The main addresses for the conference are:

Grote Gracht 90-92 for the conference days Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Minderbroedersberg 4-6 for the opening session on Monday.

Below you can find an interactive map with all the important locations marked, like conference locations and the nearest bus stops. Click on an icon to read more detailed information!

Getting to Maastricht

Maastricht has direct train connections to Amsterdam, Utrecht, Eindhoven and Liège. Travelers from Germany can reach Maastricht by train via Heerlen, Venlo, or Liège. One may also travel with the Thalys and/or Eurostar from London, Paris, Brussels or Cologne to Maastricht via Liège. For a map with additional details, click here.

For non-Europeans it is difficult to use the ticket-machines on the railway stations, because these assume the use of debit-cards with pin-codes. Therefore it is important to know that you can also buy e-tickets on-line by using your with credit card, between any two railways stations (for instance between Schiphol Airport and Maastricht) . They are valid all day, independent of the hours. See:

https://www.ns.nl/producten/en/losse-kaartjes/p/e-ticket (if the text shows up in Dutch, you can easily switch to English).

There are five international airports at a distance from 1-1,5 hours car drive from Maastricht: Brussels Airport, Düsseldorf, Eindhoven Airport, Cologne-Bonn, Brussels South/Charleroi.

Brussels Airport and Eindhoven have train connections to Maastricht (in the case of Eindhoven, there is a bus line to the local railway station; in case of Brussels there is a railway station at the airport). In the other cases special group taxis can be booked, as travelling by public transport takes longer.

Amsterdam Schiphol airport is also a very good option for many international flights. There is a train connection to Maastricht, which takes ca. 2,5-3 hours.

Maastricht may also be reached by car. The city has good connections with several highways from Amsterdam, Brussels, Luxembourg, Paris, Aachen and Cologne.

Getting to the conference

Maastricht has a relatively small city centre, which means most interesting places, as well as our conference locations, are easily accessible on foot!

However, we are also a nation of cyclists and have the option to rent a bike as part of our public transport system. A great choice if you want to get around quicker or get a taste of what it is like to live in Maastricht.

Finally, we have a well-connected bus network to get around the city.

To navigate your way with any form of transport, Maastricht has developed a website to help you. You can find the website here https://www.maastrichtbereikbaar.nl/en/homepage.

When you enter your starting address, destination and time of departure/arrival, you are prompted with several transport options including cycling, walking, public transport and car. After making your choice you will be directed to Google Maps with your route in place, ready to go! You can also find suitable parking locations close to your preferred destination on the website.

Walking

When you want to walk around Maastricht, it may be a great idea to check out the free map in your conference bag! Other maps and similar information can be obtained at the Maastricht Visitor Center (VVV Maastricht in Dutch). The address of the Center is Grote Staat 1, between the Vrijthof square and the river.

Biking

For more information on the bike-sharing system, check out https://www.nextbike.nl/en/maastricht/. You can use a free app on your phone to unlock and pay for your bike, and you can return it to any Nextbike-station in the city!

Public transport

When taking the bus, the closest stop to the main conference location is at the Market. For the opening Monday at the Minderbroedersberg the closest stop is called Bouillonstraat, next to our law faculty. The bus lines that pass these locations are 3, 4 and 9.

Going by car to the conference.

Those who want to come by car to the conference venue have to be given access by the person behind the reception desk, who will only do so if your name is registered in advance.

So, in case you want to use this option, send an email to ICHC2019MAASTRICHT@gmail.com , indicating on which days you would like to come by car & park your car on the car park of FASoS.
