In Sophie Fienne's film The Pervert's Guide to Ideology, Zizek claims that we cannot escape ideology, that it is everywhere. He argues that critique of ideology - recognising that it is everywhere - is not about uncovering 'truth' behind ideology. Instead, it is about recognising ideology that our reality is always filtered through ideology - and perhaps especially in (mass) media.
In our study of Black Mirror, we also thought about how spectacle is a powerful force for collective action; from a crowd chanting at a basketball game, to online avatars chanting for a young woman to sign her life away as a porn star(/slave).
There is clearly overlap between the concepts of spectacle and ideology, and their power over us as (social) beings.
