Helpful Tips

There are a few things to know about our math class specifically that may help you through the program:

  1. Be prepared to have lots of homework. Math is a more homework heavy class. Classes are spent explaining topics and working through examples with the class to better your understanding. There will be homework given every day near the end of class. Most days the teachers tries to leave at least some time to work on the homework in class, but it is typical that you would have work to take home. If math is one of your stronger subjects, it may be preferable to do every second question in order to save time for classes you find more difficult.

  2. Practice, practice, practice. When it comes to math, you cannot simply read over notes from the book and expect to ace your test. It is all about practice problems and figuring out what you know by trying to work through it. This is why it is important to do the homework even though it is not handed in and it is not graded. Math is a course that needs practice, not memorization. Luckily, the class textbook has problems for each separate section you learn as well as practice problems and exam-style questions at the end of every chapter for you to use before tests and exams.

  3. On top of the questions from the textbook, it is vital that you also practice from past papers. You can access them through many free online resources and can be very helpful as they are a lot more similar to the style of questions you would get in real tests or exams. The way they are asked vary from the questions in the text book and you must therefore familiarize yourself with it. Past paper questions are usually sorted according to topic or year. The past papers for most only go back to 2014 but a few go back to 1994 but answers for them may not be available and the syllabus may have changed quite a lot since then.

  4. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Often times, your teacher will offer extra help multiple days a week, whether at lunch or after school. This is a great opportunity to ask about things you are unsure of so that you are able to perform the best you can on tests. It is important to ask because if you think you've figured it out, you probably really aren't sure. Better to be safe than sorry!

  5. Online resources are a great way to learn or relearn material if you are confused because the teacher went too fast during class or you want to revisit a concept for an upcoming test. There are many YouTubers out there that cover all of the topics in IB but it is highly suggested that you watch videos by YouTubers that are specific to IB content.
