Arrival
Arrival information, including where to go for your airport pick-up on the scheduled day, and details of the orientation schedule, will come from the University of Liverpool. Spring 2021 Orientation will be held on Sunday, February 7th.
Usually, Fall semester/Full Year students are expected to arrive in Liverpool by the Monday before classes begin for a mandatory orientation. Usually, Spring semester students are expected to arrive by the Sunday before classes begin for a mandatory orientation (to be held on that Sunday). Due to the global pandemic, students may be asked to arrive two weeks earlier than usual in order to self-quarantine in special en-suite dormitories. Therefore, do not book your airline tickets until first verifying the expected arrival and departure dates with the University.
Entering the United Kingdom
You must not enter via the Republic of Ireland. If you do, you will not pass through UK immigration control and you will not get the correct permission for study in the UK.
Do not go through the e-gates at Heathrow Airport, because you will bypass the immigration control officers. If you do not physically meet with a United Kingdom immigration control officer, you will not receive the proper student visa documentation and will have to leave the United Kingdom to restart the entry process.
Always carry your University of Liverpool offer letter, proof of accommodation booked in Liverpool, and your most recent bank statements with you in your hand luggage to present to an Immigration Officer to provide evidence for the purpose of your stay.
It is important to review Visa and Immigration policies prior to ticket purchase and again prior to departure in order to ensure compliance with United Kingdom immigration laws and regulations.
On-Campus Housing
Students can opt to live in university accommodation with other exchange students as well as Liverpool students who have just returned from or are planning to study abroad. After you formally accept your offer to study at Liverpool, you will be able to apply for university housing with the Accommodation Portal, accessed through your Liverpool Life account.
Please review the housing options provided by the University of Liverpool.
If you are staying for the full academic year, you are guaranteed a place in a dormitory. You must apply through your Liverpool Life account.
If you are staying for a semester, you can apply for one of the dorm rooms available in the Study Abroad Village (Tudor Close & Melville Grove). You should apply as soon as possible to secure your place. You must apply through your Liverpool Life account.
After receiving an Accommodation offer you must accept or decline within 7 days. University of Liverpool recommends staying on campus in order to ensure a quick commute to class and to build an easier network or community of friends who are also studying abroad. The Residence Life Coordinators also plan several excursions throughout the year specifically tailored for study abroad students, including day trips to other parts of the UK.
Off-Campus Housing
Some students choose to find their own housing in Liverpool. The university is not able to recommend any agencies. If you are interested in applying for off-campus housing, please review these private housing accommodations.
When selecting a home off-campus, you should ensure that your housing is:
Registered with Liverpool Student Homes
Registered with the Liverpool City Council scheme CLASS.
Read carefully before signing your contract and we recommend viewing a potential room before you sign.
Academic Culture
The majority of courses at Liverpool involve a lecture (large group) followed by a seminar (smaller group study) or in some cases, laboratory work. Exams usually take the form of an essay midway through the semester and a final written exam during the examination period at the end of the semester. Some subject areas (especially the Sciences) may also have multiple-choice exams throughout the semester. Due to the recent global pandemic, please be advised that courses will be administered partially online, and partially in person. Some lecture course sizes will be smaller to ensure safe social distancing, and assessment schedules may be subject to change.
Statistics
Research-connected curriculum
22,000+ students on campus
7,700+ international students on campus
400+ Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses.
Course Registration
The University of Liverpool International Opportunities Office arranges course registration for all incoming study abroad students. Acceptance into your preferred course is not guaranteed, so you are advised to choose at least six preapproved courses beforehand. The International Opportunities Advisors will place you in four of those courses, ensuring you are registered in the required number of credit hours. Your acceptance letter to the University of Liverpool will include the instructions for completing this requirement.
Transcripts
Transcripts will be sent to Illinois automatically after the end of the program. However, the time for receipt and processing can take a few months. Be patient, and you can track to see when your transcript is received by the Office of the Registrar by when the digital copy is uploaded into your My Study Abroad documents.
Excursions & Cultural Engagement Opportunities
The University of Liverpool Study Abroad Team organizes a series of excursions throughout the semester especially for inbound students including field trips, day trips, welcome and farewell events. You will see the 'real' Liverpool through activities you won't find on tourism blogs! You may view details for Study Abroad Culture Calendar events, by clicking the following link Culture Calendar 19/20 - Semester 2. Further information about events and event booking will be emailed to students throughout the academic year. These events are low to no cost as they are run by the Study Abroad team.
You may also visit 'The Street', Guild of Students on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1pm-2pm to say hello to the Study Abroad team casually or receive advice for any concerns you may have during your time in Liverpool.
Inbound Buddy Program
Liverpool has a Study Abroad Buddy Program for students, which allows local student volunteers to mentor or guide incoming study abroad students. You will be matched to a student usually based on your major. If you opt into the program, you will be introduced to them virtually three to four weeks before you arrive in the UK. You will meet with them again at least once during Welcome Week, for help getting settled in and then several times throughout the academic year. They may show you their campus, take you around town, provide travel tips, share insight on accommodation, social, cultural or academic expectations, or introduce you to organizations they are involved in. The interactions and activities are based on what the two of you decide.
