Program Location: England, United Kingdom (London or Cambridge)
Arrival & Departure Airport: London Heathrow Airport (Airport Code: LHR)
Always check with your program provider for required arrival times before making any flight arrangements!
Time Change: England is 6 hours ahead of Illinois (Central Time).
Common Transportation: Bus, Train, Tram, Tube (subway), Taxi, and Walking. Apps like Citymapper will help with organizing your commute.
Arrival information, including where to go for your airport pick-up on the scheduled days, and about the orientation schedule will come from Arcadia. Therefore, do not book your airline tickets until first verifying the expected arrival and departure dates with them.
Arcadia's housing is located on the Tube’s Northern Line and within a public transport commute to class or your placement of 30 – 60 minutes (great for London!).
Two accommodations are prominent in Arcadia's housing: The Princess Elizabeth House and the Thoresby House. The London Staff will assign you to the location that will make the most sense for your program.
Read more about Arcadia's General Housing in England.
Important Notes on Housing & Meals:
Meals are not included, so you will have to budget for groceries and prepare your own meals; see our Estimate of Additional Expenses for each semester, under More Info.
Individual space, personal comfort, and social norms play a different role in England than in the United States. Housing usually features central heating and in-house hot water tanks that work on timed immersion systems for both economic and environmental savings.
Arcadia will provide each student with a pillow and a duvet. Your packing space will be limited, so we do not recommend bringing bed linens or towels with you in your luggage. There is free time on the day you arrive and during orientation for you to purchase these. Arcadia staff will be able to direct you to local shops.
Every room is different and unique. While Arcadia ensures that all rooms satisfy general standards, there is no way to guarantee uniformity of apartment and room sizes, furnishings, or facilities.Students with serious health concerns should notify their Program Manager during the application process and indicate any space needs on their housing preference form.
Arcadia reserves the right to alter or change housing options at any time should circumstances warrant.
For Semester students, your Program Manager will send you information and instructions about how to order a Student Oyster Card approximately 3 weeks prior to arrival.
Summer students will need to wait until you get to London to purchase your Oyster Card. You will receive guidance on this during your on-site orientation.
You’ll live in single rooms on or next to the King’s and Pembroke campuses. Both King’s and Pembroke Colleges are centrally located and are only minutes away from the center of Cambridge.
The four categories of housing at Cambridge are labeled from Band 1-4. On your housing form, you will be able to select which band you want, but not a specific residence within that category. Band 3 and Band 4 housing includes a supplemental cost that is not included in your housing fee. For a list of housing in each band, see Arcadia's University of Cambridge Housing web page.
Also, read more about Arcadia's General Housing in England.
Important Notes on Housing & Meals:
Dining is a central part of student life at Cambridge, and the food is traditionally of a high standard. King's and Pembroke Colleges use free-range, fair trade, and locally-sourced foods where possible and can cater to many special dietary needs—please notify us in advance so we can ensure your particular needs are accommodated.
You will have a partial meal plan that covers approximately 10 light cafeteria-style meals per week. You will eat your meals in the College you’re staying in.
Dinners known as ‘Formal Halls’ are also offered by the colleges, and give students the opportunity to dine by candlelight in ancient, atmospheric surroundings. You can find out more information about the food and dining options here.
All housing includes access to the kitchen. There are also several cafés located on the campuses, and there is an even wider variety of markets and restaurants available nearby in the town of Cambridge.
You will have access to shared laundry facilities which may not be in your exact hostel or staircase, but always close by. You’ll also be provided with towels and bedding and these will be changed regularly.
COURSES:
Semesters: You will enroll in 16 credits total: 1 required Cornerstone Course (London subject or internship course) and 3 electives. You can review the electives here, or you may choose some from one of Arcadia's British partner universities for the 12 credits of electives.
Summer Arcadia in London Program: You will study one course per session for 3 credits. You can choose one or both sessions.
Summer Internship Program: You will enroll for one out of two session options and register for a total of 6 credits: one Internship Cornerstone course with corresponding Internship placement (3 credits) and one elective course (3 credits). You will be in your placement eight hours a day for three days per week.
ENROLLMENT:
You will need to be flexible – Arcadia can’t guarantee specific courses. If your participation in the program depends on a particular course, be sure to make a note on your online course preferences form in your Arcadia Student Portal.
For semester programs, Online course registration will take place several weeks before your program begins. You will select your courses based on the timetable provided at that time. Your Program Manager will advise you as needed about the different processes for registering in partner university courses.
When completing your Academic Preferences Form, please review all course information for the program carefully.
Summer program students will need to list at least 2 elective courses per session (in order of preference) on your Academic Preferences Form in the Arcadia Student Portal.
Internship students will automatically be enrolled in the internship cornerstone course.
For the Internship program, note the following for some internship placements.
Finance & Banking Placements: The minimum GPA requirement is 3.7.
Parliamentary Placements: They are highly competitive and limited each term. Students will be expected to provide a letter of reference.
The University of Cambridge is one of the world's oldest and most renowned universities. Its reputation for outstanding academic achievement reflects the intellectual achievement of its students as well as the top-notch research carried out by its extraordinary faculty and staff.
The University consists of 31 Colleges. Each College is an independent institution and each appoints its own staff, in accordance with University guidelines. Degrees, however, are awarded by the University. A College is the place where students live, eat and socialize and is also where the small group teaching sessions or "supervisions" take place. The supervision system is one of the unique hallmarks of a Cambridge education.
The Arcadia program at the University of Cambridge is located at Pembroke and King's Colleges. You will be studying at Pembroke College.
Pembroke College has a long and illustrious history. The College campus is built around beautiful gardens and courtyards and is known for its relaxed environment, as well as for its academic excellence. The writers, politicians, mathematicians and musicians that have graced the halls of Pembroke College have earned it distinction in these areas. Pembroke today is "committed to building on those traditions of diversity in excellence".
COURSES
You will take a total of 3 courses at 3 Arcadia credits each, for a total of 9 Arcadia credits for the summer program. Summer courses are found here,
ENROLLMENT
List in order of preference of 6-8 courses.
Please use "PKP" as the course code for all your choices for the purposes of filling out Arcadia's online course form in the Arcadia Student Portal.
Students who wish to enroll in Finance and Economics courses are strongly encouraged to apply early since these courses are often the first to fill up.
TRANSCRIPTS: All programs' transcripts will be sent to Illinois automatically after the end of the program. However, the time for receipt and processing can take a few months. Be patient, and you can track to see when your transcript is received by the Office of the Registrar by when the digital copy is uploaded into your My Study Abroad documents.
Arcadia has a wide range activities to see the city outside of the classroom. Some examples of potential excursions are:
Harry Potter Studio Tour
Day trips within England to places such as Queen Windsor Castle Henry the VIII's Hampton Court, The Beatles' home in Liverpool, Brighton or Oxford
Regional trips to places such as to Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, and Hadrian's Wall
An adventure weekend off of the Wales coast
Stonehenge and Bath day trip
London Street Art tours
For more, see their program activities web page, YouTube Channel or Semester Abroad Video.
Location of housing was a 40-minute commute to class. This commute involved walking a mile, riding the subway, changing subway lines, and taking the bus. Commuting via public transportation was the only option and requires purchasing a travel card, which is very expensive. I spent over $300 on commuting to and from class. (Arcadia in London program)
Be prepared to go to the grocery store twice a week- preservative laws are different and food expires faster!
Go to the Seaside- Brighton is a city worth visiting.
The (housing) location was very far from classes, and most everything else in the city. It was in a very safe and quiet neighborhood. They provided no meals, which was frustrating. There were two beds in every room, a roommate setup. (Arcadia in London program)
Definitely stay in the dorms they provide and get a random roommate instead of rooming with someone you know because I met way more people and had a much better time than I would have had I stayed with someone I had known previously (Arcadia in London program)
Cambridge is an amazing environment where you can receive a high level of academic engagement while also making time for friends and fun.
Cambridge might seem at first like a very traditional environment, but I got to interact with a lot of LGBT+ people; it's a college town, so it always has a progressive energy around it.
Workload for PKP was a bit more than anticipated, and the structure was definitely an adjustment that needed to be made in a short period. (Cambridge program)
I absolutely recommend living in the college for future students if they are able to afford it! It ended up being an accident because I didn't submit my form in time, but I ended up loving it. (Cambridge program)
Prior to departure, contact the U.S. based staff and designated incoming student advisors through email or phone.
