Many of our team members are part of Scouts BSA troops. By introducing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) into Scouts BSA, we help to open a world of exciting opportunities for young minds to explore and discover. As traditional scouting values of leadership, outdoor skills, and community service blend seamlessly with the wonders of modern innovation, we help scouts embark on a journey that not only ignites their passion for nature but also fosters a deep curiosity for the ever-evolving world of STEM.
A key avenue through which we integrate STEM into Scouts BSA is via merit badges – patches earned by completing projects and gaining knowledge in specific areas. These badges serve as captivating introductions to diverse subjects and careers. In a notable collaboration, we teamed up with BSA Troop 468 in Fremont, CA to host an extensive 8-month merit badge initiative. This event encompasses a range of badges, including Robotics, Programming, Electronics, and Engineering. Through these endeavors, we aim to kindle interest, shape aspirations, and offer invaluable insights into the realm of STEM within the Scouts BSA framework.
With great enthusiasm, we welcomed 30 scouts who eagerly enrolled for the Robotics merit badge. We conducted an in-depth introductory session on robotics, covering its significance in various industries, diverse types and applications of robots, pathways to engage in competitions, and potential careers in the field. Following this, we organized two additional sessions, during which the scouts enjoyed hands-on experiences building their very own EV3 robots capable of tasks like line-following, projectile launching, and object manipulation.
21 scouts attended the Engineering merit badge session. During this session, we led scouts in learning about what engineers do to design and manufacture an item, past engineering achievements and the obstacles engineers had to overcome, and the different fields of engineering. Scouts also learned how basic machines can transform motion and how energy is converted between different forms. Next, scouts had the opportunity to interview engineers from various fields. Finally, scouts learned about the Engineer's Code of Ethics and learned about career opportunities in engineering.
