CHALLENGE SUMMARY
Situated in the national capital of New Dheli, Sewa Shram Shakti Foundation is a section 60 registered NGO working for the upliftment of weavers and embroidery artisans and victims of Human trafficking.Development of women and girls in the informal sector is one of their key priorities. The project is led by Ravi Shanker Kumar, and it is authorized to work across India, currently operating in three different locations: Bihar, Jharkhand and New Delhi. Currently they are associated with 13 full time artisans in Delhi and more than 50 artisans are our regular work force.
CHALLENGES
Social issue. After being trained, women employees don’t come back because of the domestic pressures from their family. As a result, the NGO loses skilled workforce.
Providing a continuous job offer to weavers and embroidery artisans. Weavers and embroidery artisans are the most important part of their supply chain. But they have a problem in providing them with continuous work.
Difficulty in sourcing raw materials at the right price. As they order the raw materials in small quantities, the suppliers usually charge high prices which increases the final price of the product significantly. Therefore, it’s not possible for them to compete with the bigger players in such a price sensitive market.
Human resources. The goal of the NGO in the challenge is to get more funding so that they could hire more professionals for better designs of their products and for also monitoring the weavers and embroidery artisans at the time of product development.
THEIR WORK
The NGO provides a professional platform with a factory environment to young girls and women for them to acquire new skills, such as weavery, embroidery.
On the one hand, they teach victims of human traffic stitching and other skills to help them obtain a meaningful work in the fashion industry. Their goal is to prepare them for the professional world, providing them with the opportunity to lead a normal life. In the last three years, they trained hundreds of victims of Human trafficking and supported them for them to lead an independent life. Additionally, they train weaver and embroidery artisans to help them become part of a high-skilled workforce, so that they could get placed in top fashion houses and become financially self reliant.
They count with a large product portfolio, which includes garments (dresses, jackets, bottoms, and crop tops), home furnishing products (cushions, bed sheets, table mats, napkins, runners); bags (clutches, tot bags, sling bags, mobile pouches, flab pags, wash bags); accessories (ear rings, necklaces, bangles and charms); innovative products from recycled wastes; and handloom fabrics (linen, silk, cotton, wool and blends).
