RIPA Volunteering Event

On August 28th, 2021, our seedlings visited Randall's Island Park's Urban Farm. At the farm, we were able to learn about different crops and their growth patterns, farming practices, composting, and different species of plants and their use in differing cultures, diets, and medicinal practices. In addition, our seedlings contributed to the farm by weeding, composting and managing compost, and planting.

CUNY in the Climate Crisis

Our SEEDS chapter was able to participate in one of the biggest events in NYC, New York Climate Week! We hosted a panel of 12 professionals, who spoke about how we can contribute to the fight against climate change.

Adirondack Mountains Trip

This past August, eight Hunter College students had the opportunity to visit the Adirondacks Park supervised by our chapter advisor, Dr. Andrew Reinmann. There, we participated in various exciting activities such as hiking, canoeing, extracting peat core samples from a bog, visiting the John Brown Farm, and the Adirondack Experience Museum. It was important that students were exposed to the park’s rich abolitionist history along with learning its ecological nature outside of a classroom setting. Check out our gallery (under the "activity calendar" section) for more amazing pictures!

Graduate Panel Discussion

Three Hunter alumni we're invited to speak about their postgraduate experiences. The purpose of this is to learn about the different educational pathways after undergrad and the different fields one can take if one decides to pursue a post-grad education.

Cassiane Bohn Au, Graduate Student at Yale School of Environment: Cassie is pursuing a master’s of environmental management with a dual specialization in Water Resource Science and Management and Industrial Ecology.

Jisun Reiner, Fellow under the NYC Urban Fellows Program: Jisun is placed in the NYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) Department working on projects relating to environmental initiatives.

Cloé Mueller, Masters student at Sorbonne Université: Cloé is a Fullbright Scholar and is now a student at Sorbonne Université studying Oceanography following her undergrad capstone.

Careers in Environmental Sciences

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month and in collaboration with the Spanish Club at Hunter, we have invited professionals in environmental sciences as a way to highlight the contributions made by the Hispanic community.

Professor Haydee Salmun of the Geography Department: She specializes in oceanic systems, its relation to land-atmospheric processes, and how these interactions are contributing to our changing climate.

Bruno Estrada, Barrio Solar Campaign Manager. His work is making solar energy sources accessible to lower-income homeowners in the New York City area. He is affiliated with a non-profit organization called SolarOne.

SEEDS BioBlitz 2023

Hunter participated in the 2023 SEEDS BioBlitz using the iNaturalist app to record their observations! A BioBlitz is a set period of time where teams compete to identify the most species of organisms. Stay tuned for 2024's BioBlitz coming up and help our chapter win!

Mohonk Preserve

This past summer, students went on an overnight camping trip to Mohonk Preserve with Professor Andrew Reinmann to learn about the geology of the Shawangunk Mountains! This opportunity was largely given to students who had not gone camping in the past so it served as an educational and hands-on field work experience for many of them. Some activities on the trip included learning about the invasive southern pine beetle, the history of Rhododendron swamp, longterm forest data collection methods, and bouldering among many others!

Hunter Green Space Beautification Project

On May 11 and 12, 2024 we had student volunteers refurbish our tree beds along the 68th Street Hunter campus. Native, perennial plants such as golden rods, asters, lupines, coralbells, and various wildflowers were planted along Kaye Playhouse, Park Avenue, and Poses Park green spaces. We hope to see our plants flourish by the beginning of Fall 2024 and since they are perennial, they make a return every spring!
